Celebrating automotive design excellence of the past, present and future.
Each year, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology participates in and is the beneficiary of two prestigious automotive design events:
- EyesOn Design car show: For more than 25 years, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology has sponsored EyesOn Design, an annual international exhibition that celebrates automotive design excellence of the past, present and future. Held on Father’s Day at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, Michigan, the show features a new theme each year.
- EyesOn Design Awards at the North American International Auto Show: Based on the success of the summer car show, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology expanded the EyesOn Design format in 2005 to include an international awards program at the North American International Auto Show, one of the industry’s most prestigious automotive design shows. Held each year at Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan, vehicles are judged by a highly distinguished international panel of automotive designers from various design disciplines, with one production and one concept vehicle being chosen.
These two innovative events have united the worlds of automotive design, design history and journalism, drawing attention to the importance of design in the automotive world. All EyesOn Design events provide financial support and raise awareness for aid to the visually impaired through the work of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology.

At each EyesOn Design event, vehicle designers and design teams have the opportunity to compete for one of the coveted Crystal Awards. Specially designed for EyesOn Design, the major awards are made of optical crystal of great purity with a very high index of refraction. Like the eye itself, these awards transmit and refract light in a spectacular manner. As with other aspects of the two events, these awards help to illustrate the connection between vision and the appreciation of the beauty of fine vehicle design.
