Information on COVID-19 and HIV

Dear Ryan White and HIV Care Providers:

We are reaching out to highlight how important it is for people living with HIV to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Current evidence indicates that vaccination is safe for people living with HIV. According to the CDC, people living with HIV may receive the vaccine provided they have not had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredients in the vaccine. Attached to this email is a PDF with further information and resources about the COVID-19 vaccine and people living with HIV.

In order to promote the COVID-19 vaccine and combat vaccine hesitation among patients, MDHHS has developed this folder of posters and images that can be used in clinic waiting rooms and on social media pages. MDHHS encourages all Ryan White and HIV Care Providers to use these images as part of vaccine promotion.

HIV Resources for Health Care Providers

The HIV Consult Program is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and Henry Ford Hospital, a leader in HIV/AIDS treatment and research. We are here to counsel and support healthcare providers about HIV care management and best practices.

The program is a valuable resource to help provider’s better care for their patients with HIV, says Norman Markowitz, M.D., an Infectious Diseases physician who leads Henry Ford’s HIV team.

Prevention and Post Exposure Treatments

• Diagnosis and Management – Managing patients, opportunistic diseases in patients, and prescribing antiretroviral medications.
• Drug Interactions – Understanding antiretroviral drug interactions with other concomitant medications.
• Occupational and Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP/nPEP) – Managing occupational and non-occupational exposure to biologic material potentially infected with HIV virus and hepatitis viruses.
• Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) – Managing patients who are candidates for pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV infection.
• Perinatal Treatment – Preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV infection during the perinatal period.

Education and Outreach

Our team is available to speak at practices or provider organizations about HIV disease management and research. We are also available to speak at local, national and international conferences about HIV related topic or research. Virtual rounds are also available.

We also offer Interactive HIV virtual sessions.
