Taking steps to bring together the sighted and visually impaired communities.
Since 2005, the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology and its Steps for Sight fundraising program have been one of the “Run for a Reason” charities in the Detroit Free Press marathon, held in October each year.
The Detroit marathon
The annual Detroit Free Press marathon brings together Southeast Michigan residents and runners from around the country and the world. All participants have the opportunity to enter a variety of events, including:
- Marathon run/walk
- 5-person marathon relay
- Half-marathon events
- 5K run/walk
Supporting the visually impaired and blind
There are many ways that participants can help support the DIO at the Steps for Sight event, including:
- Selecting DIO and Steps for Sight as their charity of choice when registering for any of these events
- Collecting pledges (pledge forms available from the DIO)
- Donating directly to Steps for Sight
- Becoming a sponsor: Since 2006, Art Van Furniture has been the Signature Sponsor of the Steps for Sight event; there are many additional sponsorship opportunities available each year, ranging from $50 to $2,500
All proceeds from the Steps for Sight fundraiser support the DIO’s programs for the visually impaired and vision-related research congresses.
“Lend an Arm” program
In the spirit of bringing together the sighted and visually impaired communities, the DIO established its Lend an Arm program. Through this program, sighted walkers who are registered for the marathon or 5K have the opportunity to partner with a visually impaired DIO support group member, and the two walk the course together. This innovative program helps the visually impaired partner participate in an event that otherwise might not be possible, while giving the sighted walker an opportunity to directly help a visually impaired person.
