Interviews

Personal interviews at Henry Ford Health Sciences Center are highly recommended. Personal visits permit an applicant to gain a firsthand view of the Health Sciences Center and its resources, and, at the same time, provide the faculty with an opportunity to assess the individual attributes and aspirations of the applicant. Interviews are scheduled by invitation only and are arranged by the appropriate program director after review of all credentials.

National Resident Matching Program

Applicants should be registered in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) to be considered for the Henry Ford Health Sciences Center residency program. The NRMP uses computers to match prospective students and hospitals according to student needs and preferences. For information, please contact:

National Resident Matching Program, Inc.
2501 M. Street, NW, 2Suite 1
Washington, DC 20037-1307

Note: Some specialties use the SF Match program to match students and hospitals.

Appointments

Appointments to the residency program are made for one year and in most cases begin the last week of June of each year, permitting a few days of early leave at the end of the academic year. Henry Ford Health Sciences Center renews resident appointments annually, enabling the resident to fulfill training requirements specified by the respective American boards. Annual renewals are contingent upon satisfactory performance by the resident. In special instances, appointment to the residency program may be made at times other than the beginning of the academic year.

Those entering PGY1 in all programs are required to have taken the ACLS certification course prior to assuming ward duties. This course is offered at no charge to all incoming residents. In order to take this course, BCLS certification is mandatory.

Licensure

All PGY1 residents are required by State of Michigan law to obtain a temporary license to practice medicine. The appropriate application will be provided to the candidate. Application for licensure must be made before training begins. Henry Ford Health Sciences Center will reimburse residents for the cost of the temporary license.

All residents, regardless of level, are urged to apply for permanent Michigan licensure at the earliest possible date. Such licensure for residents requires satisfactory completion of two years in an AMA-approved training program in the U.S. The hospital defrays a portion of the cost incurred by the resident in obtaining a permanent Michigan license.
