Familiarize students with the basic concepts in obstetrical and gynecological care.
Facilitate the learning experience by having students rotate through the following areas:
o Outpatient pre- and postnatal obstetrics
o Antepartum and postpartum hospital unit
o Labor and Delivery
o High risk obstetrics and antenatal
o Diagnosis
o Outpatient gynecology
o Pre- and post operative gynecology
o Surgical gynecology
o Gynecologic emergencies
o Gynecologic oncology

Students will also be exposed to subspecialty areas such as gynecologic oncology, gynecologic endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine and cervical dysplasia clinic and genetics.
Clerkship Activities
Location of activities: K-9 Clinic Building – OB, High Risk and Gyn Clinics; H-6 – Antepartum and Postpartum floor, Medical student computer, 1-6 Labor Delivery, Resident and Student On-call rooms, OB Morning Report in conference; H-4 Operating Room; F-6 Gynecologic and Oncology Morning Report, Gynecology Inpatient floor; Henry Ford Center for Reproductive Medicine– site of infertility and Gyn Endocrinology clinic; Fairlane Clinic – outpatient clinic and ambulatory surgery; Detroit Northwest – outpatient clinic
Student supervision in patient work-ups: All work-ups are presented to, discussed with and approved by the senior resident on each service. Clinic evaluations are discussed with the attending staff.
Student responsibilities:
Work-up of assigned OB/Gyn patients, including history, physical lab and plans
Three formal seminar presentations to attending staff
Attendance and participation in all conferences, rounds, labor and delivery, and operating room
Dress in professional manner, particularly in the outpatient clinic (Surgical scrubs are not to be worn)
Maintain patient log sheet
Teaching seminar: Students meet daily with a senior attending staff (please review the master schedule)
Operating Room: Attendance before gynecologic surgical procedure while Gyn service and oncology service; participation as second assistant. Student will be able to identify normal anatomy as well as common benign and malignant pathology.
Delivery Room activity: Medical students will evaluate patients and follow them through Labor and Delivery. Students will be assigned by senior resident. Second assistant on C-sections.
Conferences: Obstetrical service and gynecological service
Time on clerkship:
Students attend the clerkship five days a week from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Call is primarily on Labor and Delivery beginning at 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. weekdays and 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday (for 24 hours).
Students will also be assigned overnight call on L&D
The day after gynecology night call, the student is excused at noon
Student will also see patients in the emergency room and OR while on call
Meal cards are available for on-call students from the Clerkship Secretary
Call schedule will be distributed during the first week
Evaluation of Student Performance:
Weekly evaluations from resident staff
Written evaluations from teaching staff
Student seminar presentations
Oral examinations at the end of the clerkship
Clinical Clerkship Evaluation Form (blue): These forms are filled out by the student for constructive criticism and comments on their feelings regarding their overall experience on the OB/Gyn clerkship. They are turned into the clerkship secretary when completed. Students are not required to sign this form unless they wish to do so.
Evaluation of Medical Student Seminars: These are evaluated on the yellow Medical Student Seminar Evaluation Form kept in the K-9 conference room by the senior staff/residents who are in attendance at the seminar. Once this form has been completed, it is then turned into the clerkship secretary along with a copy of the handout presented by the student at the seminar.
