The Hermelin Brain Tumor Center at Henry Ford has long been a national leader in research and advanced brain tumor therapies. Our mission is to provide new hope, and to turn brain tumors into a chronic, controllable disease.
The Center was founded in honor of David Hermelin, a Michigan businessman, philanthropist, and U.S. Ambassador to Norway. When Hermelin was diagnosed with brain cancer and treated at Henry Ford Hospital, his family and friends donated $10 million to help speed the translation of research discoveries into new therapies.
We offer a breadth of experience and expertise in the treatment of:
Acoustic neuroma
Astrocytoma, glioblastoma and glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)
Leading Clinical Trials The Hermelin Brain Tumor Center is a collaboration of some of the world's most regarded clinicians and researchers and is Michigan's only program named "America's Best" the past 12 consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report. We are also one of 16 centers nationally to be charged by the National Cancer Institute to deliver new treatments through the Adult Brain Tumor Consortium, in collaboration with such leading institutions as Johns Hopkins University, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. This environment allows for expedited bench-to-bedside research and patient participation in some of the country's most promising clinical trials.
Personalized Brain Tumor Therapy We are a leader in understanding the genetics of brain tumors, and in the development of therapies matched to each patient's brain tumor genetics for the best chance at recovery. We are a major contributor to The Cancer Genome Atlas -- a national cooperative of major academic medical centers sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, responsible for identifying certain survival-related genes.
Appointment Guarantee Patients travel from around the country to find hope at the Hermelin Brain Tumor Center. We see more than 700 brain tumor patients annually, with 2,100 Tumor Board evaluations and more than 10,000 patient visits.
The Hermelin Brain Tumor Center offers guaranteed appointments with a neurosurgeon or neuro-oncologist within 24 hours. Within the same week, a comprehensive treatment plan is designed and tailored to the needs of the patient and family. We provide immediate access for brain tumor patients at any point during their care process -- from second opinions to comprehensive care management, surgery or primary postoperative care.
