Days of Discovery!
Although I love the term “recovery,” I am often tempted to exchange it for “discovery.” Everyday, it seems as though I discover something new about life, myself and others. But the greatest revelations are usually observations of things previously overlooked, the natural order of things and life beyond physical perception – the power of a smile, the wonderment in children’s eyes, the ability of tears to reach where hands can’t touch, the love in my heart for all the good people in my life. What will you discover today?

Alex, your comment today regarding "Discovery" in exchange for "Recovery" really rung my bell, is so spot on and I can truly relate to this. The stigma associated with addiction further challenges this family disease because most of us forget that Recovery is not just necessary for adults, it is unfortunately necessary for adolescents as well. My daughter has been in a teenage rehabilitation program at the Pathway Family Center located here in Southfield, Michigan for the past 10 months. Much like the Discovery which started for you at Maplegrove, the Discovery she has had about herself, others and life as well as the Discovery my wife and I have had about our entire family is truly a gift from God. I am grateful to my daughter for bringing this into our lives and I thank my daughter for helping us all Discover life as we have not seen it before. My observations, as I house 4-5 similar teenagers in my home on a weekly basis, tell me that Recovery for a teenager really is a Discovery because the disease of addiction has robbed them of their most formidable years. As they choose to Recover they now have the freedom to Discover. Today, I am hosting 5 teenage girls ages 15-18 in my home. They do 3 hours of recovery work every day on weekends and today as part of a table, I told shared about a long time acquaintance and brave fellow Ukrainian who is giving back. I shared with them your story and the message you are spreading as you walk from Mackinaw to Bloomfield. These kids are well versed and work the twelve steps daily for 9-14 months before they begin to reintegrate back into society to continue their Discovery. They immediately understood your mission. Several of them have been on national talk shows and C-Span in conjunction with the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy to promote the importance of recovery and help erase the stigma of this awful disease. These teenagers would love to show their support for your message and those who have reached the appropriate levels would love to come and walk with you for a day. They Discovered they could also give back and carry the message that Recovery is not just for adults, it’s for everyone who needs it, including kids. I believe this is the type of help I can offer that would be meaningful. How can we arrange for this to happen? Andrew L.

Hope you had a great day. You are in our constant thoughts as you continue your trek. Matt says that discovery is like a lake full of fish, each fish is a discovery. The lake is the world. He's reading your daily blog with us and he feels that you are doing quite a feat with your feet! God speed. Diane and Jim
