Sleep Disorders Center

Division Head: Michael Eichenhorn, M.D.
Section Head: David W. Hudgel, M.D.

An estimated 50 to 70 million Americans suffer from chronic sleep loss, which can increase the health risks associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, depression, heart disease and stroke.

Henry Ford operates one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive sleep centers, treating more than 1,200 patients per year. Our physicians, nurses and care providers work around the clock to address a variety of sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea and others.

Founded in 1978, we are one of the oldest sleep centers in the nation and are considered among the leading sleep laboratories in the world. We consistently rank as one of the nation's top research facilities for the scientific study of sleep. We have extensive experience and knowledge in sleep research and continue to conduct studies on:

  • The causes and mechanisms of insomnia
  • The pharmacology of sleep
  • Epidemiology of sleep and sleep disorders
  • The detrimental effects of various drugs and alcohol on sleep
  • The impact of shift work on sleep and awake functioning

Because of this advanced knowledge, we can offer a variety of treatment options not offered at many other sleep centers. For example, we operate a program that allows people with insomnia to meet in a group therapy setting and learn techniques to fight their condition over the long term – without the aid of prescription medications.
