Sharron Alejandria, Critical Care Registered Nurse, Henry Ford Hospital

It's up to me!
As the nurse at the patient's bedside, it's up to me to ensure that the patient is safe and receiving the best care possible. So that means I need to be well versed in patient care, the most up-to-date treatments and procedures, and our policies.

I always ask myself, "What is best for the patient? How can the things I do make a difference to this patient?"

Teamwork
I love the fact that this is a teaching hospital and we work with the doctors and residents as a team. I couldn't ask for a better physician group.  The doctors value our input and we're expected to be in rounds so that we can bring up concerns.  Ultimately, the patient benefits from this kind of teamwork.

My management team is amazing. They respect who I am and they respect all of us as professionals. I feel heard and I feel that I can make a difference. I'm also involved in shared governance - I'm our unit rep. We're able to bring issues to governance and come up with solutions. That's huge! As staff nurses, we have say in coming up with answers.  How empowering is that?!

My Future
I'm being encouraged to go back to school and get my bachelors degree. I love teaching and training new people and I precept many of the new nurse orients. You know, I didn't think I could do the training, but my managers saw the potential in me. I want the orient to get everything they need to be successful so there's nothing better for me than to see the new person "get it!"

Working in Detroit
I love working in Detroit. We see so many patients from all over the state and even the world, that every day is new. One of the great things about working in Detroit is that at Henry Ford Hospital we are providing some of the newest care available for patients.
