Ninety collections of manuscripts, archives and papers comprise the Historical Collections of the Conrad R. Lam Archives.
These collections document the history of divisions and departments, employee activities, conferences and other events. Some of the collections document the careers and personal and professional achievements of some of our most well-known physicians. Access to these collections is available to scholarly researchers. Academy of Surgery of Detroit [10], 1943-1974, 4.75 linear feet This small collection contains official records of the Academy of Surgery of Detroit from 1943 to 1974. These records include ledgers, minutes, membership rosters, membership applications, correspondence, photographs, and some historical items.
Administration [28], .5 linear feet This collection includes three "In Memoriam" book which were compiled and presented at times of death. One is for Edsel Ford, presented by the Trustees and Directors of the Detroit Institute of Arts; one is for Dr. John G. Mateer, presented by the Trustees and Directors of Henry Ford Hospital; one is for Eleanor Clay Ford, presented by the Trustees of Henry Ford Hospital.
Bellinger, Iva Mary Robison RN [24], 1927-1985, .25 linear feet Mrs. Bellinger was a member of the first class of the School of Nursing and Hygiene. this collection of her memorabilia includes her basketball uniform, photographs, SONAH Alumnae Bulletins, a 1925 school dedication program, a 1927 commencement program, and alumnae correspondence.
Burnham, Thomas K. MD. MD [27], 1963-1983, .25 linear feet Reprints of Dr. Burnham's articles on immunofluorescent "band" tests for lupus erythematosus, 1963-1983.
CATCH Collection [93.12], 1990-1997, 1 linear feet This collection, representing the Caring Athletes Team for Children's and Henry Ford Hospitals, includes annual reports, events programs, memorabilia and the like from the events which raise funds for CATCH.
Chimes, Enisse [3], 1955-1984, 5.5 linear feet Mrs. Chimes was a long-time member of the HFH Public Relations staff, and her collection documents her responsibilities for editing the Thermonitor, a monthly employee newspaper, and the HFH Review, a quarterly news magazine sent to benefactors and friends of the Hospital. From early 1975 until 1977, Mrs. Chimes worked on a written history of the Hospital. Although it was never published, the manuscript and notes are a part of this collection.
Community Giving [96.03], 1990s, 5 linear feet This collection contains artifacts related to Community Giving campaigns at Henry Ford Health System, including a stuffed Dewey Givewell and several lapel pins.
Coppin, Gilchrist Livingston RN [22], 1924-1982, .25 linear feet Mrs. Coppin was a member of the first class of the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and Hygiene. She generously donated her uniform cufflinks, as well as her nursing pins and paper memorabilia, photographs, newsletters and correspondence.
Corporate Administration [98.14],1991-1997, 1.5 linear feet This collection includes documentation of strategic planning meeting, planning documents, annual or planning reports, revised mission and vision statements - all from 1991 through 1997.
Deremo, Dorothy E. RN [99.03], 1 linear foot Dorothy E. Deremo RN is a 1969 graduate of the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing, and served as Vice President for Patient Services and chief HFH nursing officer from 1987 until 1998. This collection contains her lab coat and a small black leather nurse's bag, as well as her stethoscope, reflex mallet, scissors, hemostat and an index card outlining the process for taking a patient history.
Detroit General Hospital [5], 1909-1914, .25 linear feet This small collection of documents relates to the Hospital's origins under the Detroit General Hospital Association from 1909 to 1914. It includes prospectus brochures, subscriber's lists, correspondence, and clippings (especially one announcing the takeover by Henry Ford in June 1914).
Dietetics, Department of [93.11], 1951-1987, 2 linear feet This collection contains files and photographs which document dietetics training at HFH between 1951 and the middle 1980s. Some of the files relate to Margaret L. King, head of the department from the early 1940s through 1962, as well as to the Henry Ford Hospital Dietetic Alumnae Association.
Dietetics, Department of [20], 1931-1981, .25 linear feet This small addition to the Department of Dietetics collection relates to the 50th anniversary celebration of Dietetics Education at HFH. It is composed entirely of photographs of dietetic interns during that period of time, and the Anniversary Brochure.
Draeger, Marguerite Erickson [14], .25 linear feet Mrs. Draeger was a student at the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. Her small collection consists of the patient case studies she was required to write as part of her duties on the floor.
Dunworth, Genevieve RN Home Health Care Collection [97.08], .5 linear feet Genevieve Dunworth RN came to Henry Ford Hospital in 1950, and initiated the Home Health Care Referral Service in 1953. She was the administrator of that service until 1955, and again from 1969 until her retirement in 1980. This small collection documents the origins of the service and contains her reminiscences.
Ensign, Dwight C. MD [14], c1924, .25 linear feet Dwight C. Ensign MD came to HFH in 1924 as an intern. He stayed at the Hospital for 58 years, founding the Division of Rheumatology in 1942 and serving as its chairman until 1966. Papers from his internship comprise this collection.
Facilities, Department of [92.12], 1951-1982, 3.5 linear feet Photographs of construction of buildings (the Clinic. Fairlane, West Bloomfield, West Clinic and other), renovations, as well as departmental social events.
Fairlane Center [95.10], 1974-1982, 1 linear foot A collection of minutes from the Center's Long Range Planning committee (1981), floor plans for original construction and design in 1974 and 1977, and printed material from the 1970s and 1980s.
Frame, Boy MD [31], 1982-1986, .25 linear feet This collection contains items relating to the biography of Dr. Boy Frame, who founded the HFH Bone and Mineral Division and who served as Chairman of the Department of Internal medicine in 1986. It also contains items relating to his death in 1986.
Graduate Medical Education [95.07/97.07], 3 linear feet This collection includes two series of materials, the first of which is the records of the Graduate Medical Education committee from its formation in 1976 to 1990. The second series are the records of Dr. David C. Leach, Director of Medical Education from 1984 to 1997, regarding the relationship of the HFHS Medical Education programs with those of Case Western Reserve University, as well as proposals for a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant for generalist medical education and the initiation of programs once the grant was awarded.
Guyton, Jack S. MD[98.13], 1 linear foot Dr. Guyton's papers include manuscript materials and notes for a publication on ocular movement, as well as illustrations and photographs on that subject and of the staff of the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Guyton was the Chairman of that department from 1953 until his retirement in 1976.
Health Alliance Plan [98.18 ], 1977, .25 linear foot A feasibility study about group practice prepaid health care, done for the Ford Motor Company by Kaiser Permanente in 1977, comprises this small collection.
Heart and Vascular Institute [95.06], 1984-1994, 2 linear feet Artifacts from Heart Smart, H.V.I. Board minutes, reports, documents related to H.V.I.'s origins in 1984 and 1985, events documents (especially from annual Art from the Heart events and the 10th Anniversary celebration in 1994) comprise this collection.
Henry Ford II Pavilion [98.12], 1995-1998, 2 linear feet Sets of planning documents for various patient focused care units and Centers of Excellence to be located in the Henry Ford II pavilion, which was dedicated and opened at Henry Ford Hospital's Main Campus in early June 1998.
Henry Ford Health System Board of Trustees [96.07], 1990-1997, 1 linear foot Board directories, annual meeting handouts, caucus handouts, and materials from the 75th Anniversary Steering Committee comprise this collection.
Henry Ford Health System Events Office Files [99.02], 7 linear feet The HFHS Events Office Collection contains print materials and giveaways from various annual and special events, including Red Heart Blues and All that Jazz and Shoot for a Cure. These events are coordinated by the Events Office staff.
Henry Ford Hospital Medical Art Collection [2002.01], 2 linear feet The Henry Ford Hospital Medical Art Collection consists of artwork, glass negatives and photographs from the medical arts division, c.1955-2000. The use of medical arts for education began with the founding of the hospital in 1915. These mediums included artwork, graphics, photographs and later film. Medical artwork was utilized to support primary scientific research and was essential in illustrating early operations at the hospital by leading Physicians as Dr. Conrad R. Lam, Dr. Robert S. Knighton and Dr. Emerick Szilagyi. In 1948, the hospital hired the noted medical artist Robert Mohr and then Elton E. Hoff, who later expanded the department by integrating scientific photographs by John Kroll in his artwork. Many of these examples were featured at the American Medical Association and scientific medical publications.
Henry Ford Hospital Recreation Association [97.06], 1957-1977, 13 linear feet This collection contains memorabilia including uniforms, photographs, plaques, trophies, score books, and other items from the athletic teams sponsored by the HFH Rec Association over a period from 1957 to 1977. Basketball and softball teams, as well as bowling teams, were especially popular among HFH employees, enjoyed a great deal of success, and are remembered with nostalgia among long-time employees.
Henry Ford Medical Association [94.21], 1950-1995, 9.5 linear feet The Henry Ford Medical Association is a membership organization for all doctors who have ever trained or been on staff at Henry Ford Hospital. This collection contains files regarding planning of various Medical Association Reunions, as well as membership and awards, over a period of almost 50 years. The Association adds to the collection following each reunion, which are held every three to four years. Photographs of the Association events are found in the Archives Photograph Collection.
Hitchingham, Bessie RN [98.05], 1 linear foot Bessie Hitchingham was a 1933 graduate of the Henry Fords Hospital School of Nursing who stayed on at the Hospital as a pediatric and infant nurse. Her collection includes several snapshots of herself and others at the School and in the HFH nursery in the 1930s.
Hodgkinson, C. Paul MD [95.02], 1911-1990, 13 linear feet Dr. C. Paul Hodgkinson served as a member of the HFH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1942 until his retirement in 1983. He was chairman of the Department from 1952 to 1973. The collection documents Dr. Hodgkinson's career, especially his extensive research in the areas of stress urinary incontinence, early detection of breast cancer and vaginal cancer, and vaginal reconstruction. It also contains his research and lecture slides.
Hoffman, Rachel F. MSN, RN; Patient Focused Care Collection [98.19], 1991-1998, 1 linear foot Rachel Hoffman served as a nurse administrator at HFH from 1990 to 1998. She was a key member of the team that studied, planned, and initiated Patient Focused Care at Henry Ford Hospital in the mid-1990s. This collection of overheads and other presentation materials represents the introduction and roll-out of the program at HFHS.
Hunt, Myrtle RN [96.05], 1926-1928, .5 linear feet Miss Hunt was a student nurse at the HFH School of Nursing in 1928. Her collection includes photographs and memorabilia from her time as a student here.
Kelly, Ph.D., D.Sc. Annetta [2005.01], 1936-1984, 5 linear feet Dr. Annetta Kelly was a leading pharmacologist and toxicologist and was the founder of the Henry Ford Hospital Division of Pharmacology and Toxicology. She was a pioneer in the area of drug monitoring and a lead investigator with other Henry Ford Hospital scientists in governmental research. This work included studies with the Atomic Energy Commission, the Veteran's Administration, the Department of the Navy, the Army Chemical Corp and the National Research Council of the Division of Medical Sciences. This collection contains materials on the formation of the hospital toxicology department and the scientific work of the staff. The research studies include; Beta-Propiolactone, Blood, Catecholamines, Doriden, Intocostrin, Morphine, Nitrogen Mustard and Poisons.
Kingswood Hospital[95.03], 1966-1991, .5 linear feet Kingswood Hospital is a psychiatric inpatient facility which opened in 1966 and was affiliated with HFHS in 1986. This small collection contains materials from its opening and from anniversaries, as well as public relations brochures and historical articles. In addition to the paper collection, the Archives has a model of the building from its remodeling project in 1996.
Konde, William DVM Collection [17], 1979-1980, .25 linear feet This collection contains the Henry Ford Hospital Bioresources Manual for Laboratory Animal Care, 1980, and the Report of Activities of the Bioresources Facility, 1979-1980.
Kroll, John Audio-Visual Collection [93.03], 1948-1970, .40 linear feet John Kroll came to HFH as a staff photographer in 1948, and headed the Photography department until his retirement in the early 1970s. His collection contains many films which he made in partnership with doctors at the Hospital. Also a series of negatives, c.1949-1966, in which illustrate the history of Henry Ford Hospital events. Mr. Kroll invented equipment and initiated procedures which allowed still and motion photography in the OR with decreased risk to the patient. His photographs are also featured throughout the Archives Photograph Collections.
Lam, Conrad R. MD [2 and 92.17], 1912-1990, 27 linear feet Dr. Conrad Lam came to HFH as an intern in 1932, and spent his entire surgical career at the Hospital. His collection features a long subject series reflecting his research interests, especially burns, wound healing, heparin, and cardiac surgery. Dr. Lam was a pioneer in the latter field in the 1950s and 1960s, and his documentation reflects that important time. In addition, he kept materials reflecting the history of the Hospital, biographical information on his colleagues, the history of surgery, and the history of medicine. The collection is far-reaching and very valuable. In addition to Dr. Lam's papers, his microscopes, ophthalmoscope, typewriter, and other artifacts and photographs are also preserved in the collection.
Lierly, Joyce Mianck RN [97.11], c1947, 1 envelope Photocopies of sheet music for the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps March, sung by members of the Corps at HFH School of Nursing during the late 1940s.
Livingood, Clarence S. MD [98.08], 1940-1998, 75+ linear feet Dr. Livingood came to HFH in 1953 as Chairman of the Department of Dermatology. His collection documents his education at the University of Pennsylvania, and his career at Penn and at the University of Texas at Galveston before coming to Detroit. It also documents his 45 years of leadership at HFH, in the Department of Dermatology, at the Hospital, and within the Henry Ford Health System. Books, journals, photographs and awards, and artifacts are including in the collection.
Lowrie, William L., M.D. [2004.01], 1930-1970, 4 linear feet Dr. William L. Lowrie was a specialist and researcher in the field of diabetics. In 1922, he came to Henry Ford Hospital to work with Dr. Ralph H. Major in the area of metabolic diseases. After holding several positions at the hospital he became the head of the Metabolic Division in 1924 and held this position until 1962. He was also interested in health care systems and with his wife, Kathleen Jennison Lowrie, traveled to the Soviet Union and to Norway in the 1930's to study outpatient practices. His papers cover the history of the Metabolic Division, diabetic research at the hospital, early work in diabetic medicine with Pharmaceutical Companies and the Michigan Diabetes Association.
Main Cashiers Office [30], 1916-1926, .75 linear feet Financial reports, inventories, auditor's reports, general ledgers, divisional costs, and profit and loss statements comprise this small collection.
McClure, Roy Donaldson MD [92.04], 1916-1951, 2 linear feet This small collection documents the career and research of Dr. McClure, who was the Hospital's first Surgeon-in-Chief and served from 1916 until his death in 1951. Dr. McClure did important research in the areas of blood and burns, and was one of two important physicians who led the Hospital over a period of 35 years. His contributions helped to shape the Hospital and have influenced its growth throughout the 47 years since his death. Although the collection is small, it is particularly valuable because of Dr. McClure's key role at HFH.
McClure, Roy D. MD Surgical Society [94.22], 1977-1984, .25 linear feet The Roy D. McClure Surgical Society is an organization of HFHS surgeons whose meetings are often held concurrently with the reunion meetings of the Henry Ford Medical Association. The collection contains correspondence, rosters, and minutes.
McCole, Cornelius E. MD Ophthalmology Collection [96.04], 11 linear feet This collection reflects the history of the Department of Ophthalmology during the time of Dr. McCole's chairmanship (1976-1992). It contains annual reports and an extensive subject file which reflects the departmental activities and concerns as well as Dr. McCole's personal and professional interests.
McGraw, Arthur MD [92.02], .25 linear feet Dr. McGraw joined the HFH staff in 1922 and later became the Surgeon-in-Charge of what was then known as the "Tumor Clinic." He served as a surgeon at the Hospital until his death in 1954, and was known for his talented surgical skills and for his excellence in teaching. Dr. McGraw's collection includes four surgical logs which record surgeries over a period of 17 years.
Metcalf, William F. MD [21], 1828-1925, 2.25 linear feet Dr. Metcalf was a surgeon at Harper Hospital in Detroit in 1909 when he devised a plan for a new general hospital for the city. He worked with a group of businessmen called the Detroit General Hospital Association to raise funds for the new hospital and to begin its construction. By the time the Hospital, then called Henry Ford Hospital, opened in 1915 he had split with the originators and was again practicing on his own. The collection contains biographical information, files related to the origins of what was to have been the Detroit General Hospital, information about medicine at Harper Hospital, and other information about hospitals and medicine in Detroit.
Metro Medical Group Collection[95.07], 1957-1995, 3 linear feet Metro Medical Group, a group practice with origins tied to the UAW in the 1950s, affiliated with HFHS in 1986. In 1995, MMG merged with the Henry Ford Medical Group. This collection contains photographs of Metropolitan Hospital and other related facilities including a TB sanitarium, audio tapes of 7 programs, newsletters, Metropolitan Hospital documents and financial statements, historical materials, correspondence, and information about HAP and the early Community Health Association.
Michigan Hospital Service [93.09], 1949-1959, 1 folder Sample life insurance policies from the Michigan Hospital Service, a forerunner of Michigan Blue Cross Blue Shield.
Morris, Naomi RN [93.08], 1925-1932 .25 linear feet Naomi Morris RN was a graduate of the first class (1927) of the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and Hygiene. After graduation she served as a nurse at the Hospital, and she was active in the School's newly formed alumnae association. The items in this small collection, including a case record form, a 1925 newsletter and various banquet programs, are memorabilia from her time at HFH.
Nelson, Stanley R. / Office of the President[98.17], 1 linear foot Oversize photographs and graphics used at retirement ceremonies for Mr. Nelson, as well as two reports ("Report on Henry Ford Hospital" by Institutional Strategy Associates, 1978; and "Health Care Satellites for Wayne and Oakland Counties" presented to Greater Detroit Area Hospital Council, 1973) comprise this collection.
Nursing, Department of [97.03], 1915-1995, l linear foot This small collection contains an early Nursing Department manual containing committee minutes, circulars and orders which belonged to Dr. Frank Sladen, as well as a series of administrative policies, departmental communications, patient care procedures, nursing services studies, and other information regarding the Department of Nursing at HFH from 1917 until about 1950. In addition, a third series contains internal publications of the Department from the 1990s.
Otolaryngology, Department of [94.17], 1 linear foot Annual reports of the Department of Otolaryngology from 1936 (when the department split off from the former Department of Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat) until 1987 comprise this collection.
Patent Summaries [99.01], 1980-1997, .5 linear feet Summary reports of patents awarded by the United States Patent Office to various physicians associated with Henry Ford Health System during the 1980s and 1990s.
Pediatrics, Department of [98.03], 1980-1991, .5 linear feet This small collection contains minutes of the Pediatric Education Committee from 1980 through 1986, the 1991 report of the residency review committee for Pediatrics, and the 1992 integration agreement for the pediatric residency programs at HFHS and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. A list of alumni physicians of the department is also included.
Pharmacy Services, Department of [32], 1928-1996, 6 linear feet This collection contains formularies from the Hospital's Pharmacy from the 1920s through the 1990s, and some undated handwritten formularies which precede the 1920s. Also included are correspondence, committee minutes, narcotics orders, organizational charts, service reports and recommendations, other items documenting the history of this department.
Philanthropy, Office of [94.20], 1989-1997, 4.5 linear feet Files of the HFHS Office of Philanthropy, including records from various events planned by the Office, as well as planning materials for a major fundraising campaign called the "Fund for the Future" which was launched in 1994.
Pine Knob [94.14], 1953-1958, .25 linear feet Photographs, correspondence and weekly unit reports related to the Hospital's convalescent unit at Pine Knob, as well as documents related to its sale in 1958.
Planning and Marketing Collection [95.09], 5 linear foot Artifacts and ephemera from various Planning and Marketing events and advertising campaigns during the mid-to-late 1990s.
Ponka, Joseph Luke MD [93.06], 1921-1994, 14.5 linear feet Dr. Ponka came to HFH as an intern in 1942. He spent his entire surgical career at the Hospital, serving until his death in 1993. During those 50 years, Dr. Ponka published 115 papers on surgical techniques and wound healing, and won universal recognition as an excellent teacher of surgery. His collection includes research materials, reprints, correspondence, conference materials and teaching notes. Manuscript materials for an intended book on the history of medicine are also included, as well as various medical artifacts.
Pratt, Jean Paul MD [93.10], 1908-1965, l linear foot Dr. Jean Paul Pratt came to HFH from Johns Hopkins in 1916 and was its first and long-time chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics. His collection contains reprints from articles written throughout his career, as well as a book chapter.
Priest, Robert J. MD [92.25], 1953-1973, .25 linear feet Dr. Priest was a gastroenterologist at HFH who served as a member of the Nursing Service Committee for 20 years, and this small collection contains the minutes of Committee meetings which took place during that period. Also included is a copy of "An Atlas on Biliary Drainage Microscopy," a scrapbook-type book compiled by B.B. Vincent Lyon MD and presented by him to Dr. John Mateer in 1935.
Primeau, Paul MD [92.10], 1978-1981, .5 linear feet This small collection contains Dr. Primeau's files regarding the planning of facilities for HFHS satellite centers in Warren and throughout the Northeast region.
Public Relations [92.09], 1991-1992, .5 linear feet Press releases and clipping files for 1991 and 1992 from the Office of Public Relations.
Public Relations / Media Relations Reports [15], 1981-1983, .5 linear feet This file contains media relations reports, which are compilations of clippings photocopies, for 1981, 1982 and 1983.
Quality Improvement [98.07], 13.5 linear feet Files, evaluations, and manuals from the quality improvement teaching program which was initiated at HFHS in 1990. Materials from the original roll-out programs are also included in the collection of files, video-tapes, and slides.
Quinn, Edward L. MD [95.05], 1908-1995, 18 linear feet Dr. Quinn came to HFH as a resident in 1942. He founded the Division of Infectious Diseases and was its Chief from 1949 until 1982. He was also Director of the Infectious Diseases Research Laboratory during that time, and he has served as a teaching physician throughout his career. This collection documents the origins, growth, and accomplishments of the Division of Infectious Diseases from 1944 to 1988. It also contains files reflecting Dr. Quinn's professional activities and his work on the medical advisory council of the Detroit Zoo from 1965 to 1986, reprints of his many published articles and chapters, and a subject series of research materials on myriad subjects related to the field of infectious diseases. Dr. Quinn's medical bag and some instruments are in the collection as well.
Reader, Zar, DDS [2001.01], 30 linear feet Zar Reader, DDS was one of the first dentists to practice at Henry Ford Hospital and gave thirty-four years of service to the institution. He graduated in 1936 with a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. During WWII he was stationed in Naples, Italy at the Harper Hospital Unit U.S. Army 17th General Hospital. In 1946 he joined the senior staff at Henry Ford Hospital and became a specialist in the area of Periodontics. He was active in the Detroit Dental Club, and assisted in the organization and served in both the Russell W. Bunting Periodontal Study Club and the Michigan Society of Periodontists. In addition to these organizations, he was known for his diligent philanthropic work with the National Youth Administration and the Children's Fund of Michigan. This collection consists of manuscripts and documents related to the Henry Ford Hospital Department of Dentistry, teaching materials, slides, photographs research papers and dental artifacts.
Real Estate and Legal Collection [96.06], 1909-1991, 1 linear foot This collection contains abstracts of title for several HFH properties including the original 20 acre parcel on West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, the site of the Main Campus, various articles of association, agreements, releases, and patent assignments.
Royer, Thomas C. MD Board of Governors Collection [99.08], 1.5 linear feet Dr. Royer served as Chairman of the Henry Ford Medical Group Board of Governors from 1994 until 1999. His regular "Update" communications to President and CEO Gail Warden document the priorities and focus of his activities and those of the Board of Governors during those five years. The collection also contains audio and video cassettes of some of Dr. Royer's presentations.
Sahney, Vinod K. Collection [99.07], .25 linear feet Dr. Sahney has been an administrator at HFHS since 1981. In 1988 he was named Corporate Vice President for Planning and Marketing; in 1993 he became Senior Vice President, Strategic Planning and Development. This collection represents some of his articles and speeches.
School of Nursing and Hygiene [93.08], 1913-1996, 42.5 linear feet The Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and Hygiene, which had been planned since 1913, opened in 1925. Until it closed in 1996, the School provided excellent nursing education in the form of a diploma program which involved training in the basic sciences as well as in nursing arts and practices. More advanced students participated in rotations on the Hospital units, perfecting their skills in care for inpatients and outpatients. The SONAH Collection contains Administrative files from 1913 to 1995, curriculum materials from 1925 to 1996, a small subject file containing biographical information and documents from various events and clubs at the School, and a series of printed materials including programs, brochures, and pamphlets. In addition, there is an entire file cabinet of still photographs from the school. Ephemera and artifacts, including several athletic trophies, are also in the collection. This collection is important as it documents the entire history of nursing education at Henry Ford Hospital.
Shaw, Ruth [93.02], 2 envelopes Miss Shaw was the Head Secretary of the HFH Secretarial Pool from the 1940s until her retirement in 1980. Her small collection contains 1 envelope of snapshots and one envelope of insurance policy documents which serve as examples of employee benefits of the time.
Six Clinic Conference [92.11], 1992-1998, 1 linear feet The Six Clinic conference is an annual meeting, initiated in 1955 at HFH, with participants from each of six group practices from around the country. The meeting rotates sites between HFH, the Cleveland Clinic, Lahey Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Ochsner, and Lovelace. These files are printed materials from two of these conferences which were hosted by HFH in Detroit.
Six Weeks to Wellness [98.11], 1998, .5 linear feet Six Weeks to Wellness is an employee health initiative sponsored by HFHS Human Resources. It involved increased exercise, better nutrition, reduced smoking, and other activities over a period of six weeks. The collection includes memorabilia from the 1998 program.
Sladen, Frank J. MD [92.14], 1883-1976, 22 linear feet Dr. Frank J. Sladen was the first doctor at HFH, and served as its Physician-in-Chief from 1915 until his retirement in 1953. He remained connected with the Hospital until his death in 1973. His leadership and involvement at HFH was far reaching, and the largest series in his collection is a correspondence and subject file of materials on virtually every aspect of hospital administration, construction of new buildings, medical education, patient care, innovations in medicine, and war time activities. The collection also contains his articles and speeches over almost 60 years, an unfinished manuscript on the history of the Hospital, and a scrapbook of items dating from 1911 to 1916 and which document the origins of the Hospital. In addition, there is a series of materials on Sir William Osler, who was Dr. Sladen's teacher and mentor during his medical training at Johns Hopkins. Photographs and artifacts are in the collection as well. As Dr. Sladen was the Hospital's first physician, and one of the most important people to have been on its staff, this collection is especially valuable to the Archives.
Sladen Library Collection [92.19], 1915-1994, 1 linear foot There have been library services at HFH since its opening. This historical collection contains annual reports, statistics, staff lists, policy manuals, and quality improvement records related to the library and its operations from 1915 to about 1994.
Smith, F. Janney MD [92.22], .25 linear feet Dr. Smith came to HFH in 1916 and was the Hospital's first cardiologist. His collection contains biographical information and reprints, as well as copies of newsletters published at the Hospital during World War
Smith, Richmond W. Jr., MD [8], 1949-1988, 5 linear feet Dr. Smith came to HFH as an intern in 1942. He founded the Division of Endocrinology in 1953 and served as its chief until he was appointed Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine in 1966. He retired in 1979, moving to Maine and serving as consultant to two area hospitals there, and becoming a "carpenter and stone mason." Dr. Smith's leadership was Hospital wide, and his collection contains materials which document his leadership of the division of Endocrinology, his chairmanship of the Department of Medicine, and his involvement in the planning for a major grant from the Ford Foundation which was awarded in 1973. Research materials and personal correspondence are also included in the collection.
Spaulding, Gertrude RN [92.05], 1 linear foot Miss Spaulding was a 1928 graduate of the School of Nursing, and was active as the historian alumna of her class. She kept this oversized scrapbook over a period of many years, with information about each class member. She also donated her thermometer, a large glass instrument with a metal case.
Stevenson, Opal RN [94.03], 1 linear foot Miss Stevenson was a 1933 graduate of the School of Nursing, and donated to the Archives five of her organdy nurses caps. She also gave us her framed class composite photograph of the Class of 1933.
Stewart, Cleo RN [98.10], .5 linear feet Cleo Stewart was a 1938 graduate of the School of Nursing who stayed on as a staff nurse and then an instructor and administrator at the School. Miss Stewart was responsible for the day to day administration of the School.
Surgery, Department of, Collection [99.06] 4.5 linear feet (Publications - 11 linear feet) This collection contains the bound annual reports of the Department of Surgery from 1928 until 1991, the minutes of surgical staff meetings from 1938 until 1947, surgical procedures manuals, staff directories, departmental reviews, and some other materials.
Szilagyi, D. Emerick MD [98.06], 6 linear feet Dr. Szilagyi came to HFH as an intern in 1939 and remained here throughout his career. He was a pioneer in the field of vascular surgery and initiated that specialty at HFH. He served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1966 until his retirement in 1975, when he stayed on the staff as a consultant. His collection contains files and slides of his research and teaching presentations, files from his three years as physician to the Ford Rubber plantation in Brazil, and files which reflect his leadership in the Department of Surgery and at HFH in general.
Taber, Rodman E. MD [98.04] Dr. Taber was a member of the surgical staff at HFH staring in the early 1950s. this collection contains his reprints, which relate to his work in thoracic surgery, and two films which demonstrate procedures he developed ("Closure of the Median Sternotomy" and "Functional Restoration of the Aortic Valve with High Speed Drill").

Waters, Virgil [2005.02], 1967-1994, 1.5 linear feet This collection includes materials on the Henry Ford Hospital Division of Emergency Medicine. Virgil Waters was a patient advocate in the department and worked on the early policies and strategic plans. He was also a founding member of the Ford Men's Social Club and the Henry Ford Recreation Association. The materials also include papers on the Henry Ford Hospital basketball team, in which Virgil Waters held the position of coach, c.1960-1980. The team was well known and competed with other Metropolitan Detroit Hospitals.
Warden, Gail L. / Office of the President Collection [ 98.09 and 98.02], 1988-1998, 8 linear ft. Gail L. Warden came to HFHS as President and CEO in 1988. This collection contains a series of his speeches, over ten years, which documents the priorities and accomplishments of the Health System. It also contains materials relating to Mr. Warden's investiture as president of AHA in 1995, and copies of the CEO Briefings, a newsletter published twice monthly from Mr. Warden's office and sent to trustees, executives and friends of the Health System. Many changes and significant growth occurred at HFHS during this decade, and this important collection preserves key information about that change and growth.
Watson, John, Ph.D. [2001.02], 1946-1981, 70 linear feet John Watson, Ph.D., a native of St. Catherine's, Ontario, was an internationally known physicist in the field of electron microscopy. He received his undergraduate degree from McMaster University in 1939 and a Doctorate in 1943 from the University of Toronto. During this period he worked with Professor Eli F. Burton, a pioneer in the construction of the first operating electron microscope in North America. In 1939 he received a research grant from the National Research Council and joined the staff of the physics department at the University of Toronto. With his work with the electron microscope, he worked on the secret WWII Manhattan Project in the United States, which produced the first atomic bomb. He joined the staff of Henry Ford Hospital in 1947 and worked for thirty-five years in the Edsel B. Ford Institute of Medical Research. At the hospital, he conducted research with leading physicians and scientists, including Drs. Clarence Livingood, William Haubrich, E. Osborne Coates and Geoffrey L. Brinkman. He was widely published in the area of microscopy and acknowledged for scientific discoveries in Whipples Disease, genetic disorders and Legionella pneumophilia. In addition, he was a founder of the Windsor Light Opera Association and was a frequent conductor for hospital musical events.

Wheat, Elizabeth Russell [6],1918-1919, .25 linear feet This collection contains materials which relate to Henry Ford Hospital's occupation by the U.S. Army during World War I, when it was known as U.S. Army General Hospital No. 36. Two copies of the Thirty-Six Review from 1919 (it resembles a yearbook) are included, as well the first issue of a newspaper called The Detroit Azuwer, dated February 8, 1919.
Wolf, Charles B. MD [2000.01], 1966-1996, .5 linear feet Dr. Charles Wolf, a long time HFH pediatrician, was responsible with others for the recognition of the Wolf Peterson Weiss Syndrome (Ring 1 Chromosome with Dwarfism). This collection contains his journal article describing the syndrome, newspaper articles, and correspondence with study subjects as well as physician colleagues from around the world.
Wyandotte Hospital / W.H. Honor MD Collection [97.05], 3 linear feet This collection of artifacts from the Pathology Department of Wyandotte Hospital was left there by Dr. Honor, one of Wyandotte's first and most beloved physicians. Dr. Honor's medical bag, scale, metal instrument box, and autopsy instruments were on display in the department for many years before they were transferred to the Archives.
