Ultrasound Technology is an exciting allied health specialization. The sonographer, under the supervision of a physician, uses their expertise and ability to obtain diagnostic information about the human body. Sonography has been used in medical diagnosis for 30 years.

Outlook Sonographers are employed throughout the country in hospitals, medical offices, and in the commercial field. This is a developing profession in which opportunities abound. While starting salaries vary, in general, introductory salaries average about $53,000.
Henry Ford Program The DMS Program at Henry Ford is fully accredited by the Joint Review Commission on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. It has been in existence for more than 33 years. Students are educated in general sonography and obtain a limited rotation in vascular sonography, receiving about 960 didactic hours of instruction. Clinically, students rotate through Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI and at the seven suburban satellite facilities.
Length The program lasts 18 months, beginning in September of each year.

Program Goals The goals of the program are to provide an academic curriculum for the student to develop the cognitive skills to be a sonographer; provide a variety of clinical practice and scanning labs for the student to develop the physical and evaluation skills to be a sonographer; prepare students to pass the ARDMS examinations in the areas of Physics, Abdomen, and Obstetrics/Gynecology; give students an introductory experience in Vascular Sonography, Adult Echocardiography and Musculoskeletal Sonography; prepare students to serve the community as a medical professional; and offer an environment of continuous improvement in student education and staff development.
