The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Pharmacy Services has been training pharmacy residents since 1980 and is regarded as a premier institution for training pharmacists. Historically, Henry Ford Hospital has trained "specialty" pharmacy residents in critical care, nephrology, and solid organ transplant. In 2006, a PGY1 residency training program was reinstituted. The program received ASHP accreditation for 6 years, which is notable since most programs receive 3 year accreditation and only 8% of residency programs receive 6 year accreditation. In 2007, the PGY1 program was expanded to 6 residents, making Henry Ford Hospital the largest PGY1 residency program in Michigan. Henry Ford Hospital also offers a PGY2 residency in critical care. In addition, a PGY2 residency in infectious diseases began in 2009.
The following programs are available at Henry Ford Hospital:
Post-graduate year one (PGY1) residency in pharmacy practice (ASHP accredited)
Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in critical care (ASHP accredited)
Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in infectious diseases (ASHP candidate)
The Henry Ford Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program has received several national and local awards:
Susan Davis, PharmD (infectious diseases preceptor) received the 2008 New Preceptor Award from the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Residency Excellence Award program. This national award recognizes excellence, service, and innovation in a preceptor in the first five years of practice.
James Kalus, PharmD, BCPS (PGY1 program director) received the 2008 Preceptor of the Year award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
The PGY1 Residency in Pharmacy Practice received the 2009 Amgen Residency Award, which is awarded annually to residency programs demonstrating excellence in the preparation of future pharmacists.
The PGY2 Residency in Infectious Diseases was awarded the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists/Ortho McNeil Janssen Infectious Diseases Residency Award, which supports the development of training programs that are committed to excellence in infectious disease pharmacotherapy practice.
