Our interventional pulmonology program is a cornerstone to our thoracic cancer department. Many patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma choose Henry Ford for our minimally invasive diagnostic options and advanced treatments. These services provide many more options for patients with complex or recurring lung tumors, or who need therapeutic treatments to relieve pain and breathing difficulty.
Interventional Pulmonology at Henry Ford
We are the only comprehensive interventional pulmonology program in Michigan. Our program has a rich history as a leader in this field. Our specialists have helped develop some of the most advanced minimally invasive lung procedures used today. Henry Ford has one of the country’s few fellowship training programs; That means, we train other doctors how to perform the advanced procedures we offer.
What is Interventional Pulmonology?
Interventional pulmonology is a relative new field that helps doctors diagnose and treat lung cancer and mesothelioma. The procedures we use involve a bronchoscope, a long, thin, hollow tube with a camera and light at the end. Our doctors insert the bronchoscope into your lungs to work from the inside out. These procedures do not require open surgery, any cuts or incisions, or hospital stays.
Our procedures help patients in many ways:
- Advanced Diagnosis: We can take tissue samples from almost anywhere in your airways
- Destroy Tumors: We have many minimally invasive tools for destroying cancer cells
- Prepare Patients for Chemotherapy: Our therapeutic techniques can get patients in better shape for more aggressive treatments
- Help Patients Breath Easier: We can open up your airways to relieve your cancer symptoms
