Ocular oncology research explores the most effective ways to prevent and treat eye tumors.
Eye tumors develop as either a primary or metastatic tumor on the eyelid, orbit, cornea, conjunctiva, iris, retina or optic nerve. Ocular oncology research, also known more commonly as eye cancer research, focuses on how best to prevent the disease as well as treat it. This may include new diagnostic tests, surgical treatments, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, or targeted genetic therapies such as development of new anti-angiogenic agents.
Collaborating on cancer research
In addition to studies performed within the Department of Ophthalmology, our eye cancer research physicians provide support for other oncology studies being performed by other Henry Ford Medical Group physicians. Many research studies on oncology drugs and procedures have the potential for ocular complications. In these cases, our ocular oncology research physicians are often called upon to serve as consultants during these clinical research studies, helping to monitor these patients and provide coordinated treatment.

In addition, our team works closely with Henry Ford Medical Group physicians in other departments, providing multidisciplinary, coordinated care for those patients who need it.
