The Henry Ford Hospital Department of Pharmacy Services has been training pharmacy residents since 1980 and is regarded as a premier institution for training pharmacists. The PGY1 residency program at Henry Ford Hospital is the largest in the state of Michigan. The pharmacy residency training program prepares clinical pharmacists who are well trained for general or specialized clinical pharmacy practice and who will optimize the outcomes of our patients, support our health-system’s recruitment needs and advance the profession of pharmacy.
The following programs are available at Henry Ford Hospital:
- Post-graduate year one (PGY1) residency in pharmacy practice (ASHP accredited)
- Post-graduate year one/two (PGY1/2) residency in pharmacotherapy (ASHP candidate)
- Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in critical care (ASHP accredited)
- Post-graduate year two (PGY2) residency in infectious diseases (ASHP accredited)
- Infectious diseases pharmacy fellowship in antimicrobial stewardship
The Henry Ford Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program has received several national and local awards:
- Susan Davis, PharmD (infectious diseases preceptor) received the 2008 New Preceptor Award from the ASHP Foundation Pharmacy Residency Excellence Award program. This national award recognizes excellence, service, and innovation in a preceptor in the first five years of practice.
- James Kalus, PharmD, BCPS (PGY1 program director) received the 2008 Preceptor of the Year award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
- Michael Peters, RPh, BCPS (PGY2 critical care program director) received the 2009 Preceptor of the Year award from the Southeastern Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
- The PGY1 Residency in Pharmacy Practice received the 2009 Amgen Residency Award, which is awarded annually to residency programs demonstrating excellence in the preparation of future pharmacists.
- The PGY2 Residency in Infectious Diseases was awarded the Society of Infectious Disease Pharmacists/Ortho McNeil Janssen Infectious Diseases Residency Award, which supports the development of training programs that are committed to excellence in infectious disease pharmacotherapy practice.
