The Henry Ford Department of Radiation Oncology specializes in new applications for radiation therapies, helping thousands of cancer patients every year. Our radiation oncology specialists use the most advanced radiation technologies available today. Our Radiation Oncology specialists—including physicians, physicists, biologists, therapists and safety experts—are among the most experienced in the U.S. in the design and delivery of radiation oncology treatment. We work closely with other cancer specialists and discuss every patient's treatment options at Henry Ford tumor boards each week, creating personalized radiation plans that are safe and effective.
Advanced Radiation Oncology Therapies
The Henry Ford radiation oncology team continually focuses on how to improve radiation treatment delivery. We have pioneered the development and improvement of many types of radiation oncology therapies:
- We were the first in the world to develop radiosurgery for the treatment of spinal tumors and spinal cancer - helping reduce patient pain while preserving the ability to walk.
- We have advanced the use of shaped-beam radiosurgery and 3D-conformal radiation therapy with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for primary and metastatic brain tumors.
- We have developed investigational gene therapies for the treatment of prostate cancer, and continue to lead gene therapy research in other types of cancer.
- We are devoted to exploring alternative therapies such as acupuncture and exercise to help relive side effects of hormonal therapy for breast cancer and prostate cancer.
Radiation Oncology Research and Education
The Henry Ford Department of Radiation Oncology performs basic science and clinical trials research funded by many sources, including the National Cancer Institute and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. Our specialists work together to continually improve patient care, the effectiveness of radiation treatment, and the safety of radiation technologies. Our Radiation Oncology Residency Program and Radiation Physics team are among the top in Michigan and the U.S.
