<title>Henry Ford Receives Funding From World Series Pitcher for Bereavement Camp </title>
			<link>http://www.henryford.com/body.cfm?id=46335&amp;amp;action=detail&amp;amp;ref=890</link>
<description>Nov. 3, 2008&amp;#13;&amp;#10;CONTACT: Zoila Brown Zbrown1@hfhs.org &amp;#13;&amp;#10;DETROIT &amp;#8211; Detroit may not have won the World Series, but local kids will receive a special gift from World Series All-Star Pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;The SandCastles Grief Support Program, part of Henry Ford Hospice, has received a $100,000 gift from The Moyer Foundation to expand a bereavement camp for children and teens who have lost a loved one.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;SandCastles is the only grief support program in Michigan to receive funding from the foundation to continue the national Camp Erin expansion of bereavement camps for children and teens who have lost someone close to them. &amp;#13;&amp;#10; &amp;#8220;Children inspire us every day to do what we do at The Moyer Foundation,&amp;#8221; said co-founder Jamie Moyer, father of seven and starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the World Series. &amp;#8220;Baseball gives me the opportunity to do what I do, but strong community involvement allows us to continue to expand Camp Erin to address this need and help more children. Working together with local communities, we can make a difference in the lives of grieving children and teens across the country.&amp;#8221; &amp;#13;&amp;#10;Camp Erin is named in memory of Erin Metcalf of Woodinville, Washington, who developed liver cancer at the age of 15. Erin had a compassionate heart and when she was hospitalized she often expressed concern for the other children there as well as their siblings, who sometimes received little attention.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;In 2000, when Erin died at the age of 17, Jamie and Karen Moyer wished to honor Erin's memory and her caring spirit. Acknowledging her love ofchildren and her desire to help others, the Moyers felt that a griefcamp for children would be an appropriate tribute. The first Camp Erinwas established in Everett, Washington in 2002.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;Locally, the SandCastles grief support program holds an annual camp in the summer for grieving children and teens. The local camp will now be called Camp Erin and will allow SandCastles to expand the camp from about 100 children to about 150 children and teens who can benefit from the generosity of the Foundation.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#8220;We are honored to receive this funding and are so thankful to The Moyer Foundation for their generosity,&amp;#8221; says Peggy Nielsen, manager of SandCastles. &amp;#8220;This funding allows us to expand the camp and possibly hold special sessions for teenagers who are dealing with grief who we have found can especially benefit from the camp.&amp;#8221;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;In addition to the yearly camp, the SandCastles Grief Support Program serves families with children and adolescents ages 3-18 in a year round community-based program. Since its inception in 1997, SandCastles has served almost 2000 families representing more than 5,400 people throughout southeast Michigan. It has sites in Clinton Township, Detroit, Livonia, Rochester, St. Clair Shores, Southfield and Downriver.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;For further information on the camp and volunteer information call (313) 874-6881.
