Roaring 20’s Event Benefits Cancer Patients at Henry Ford

DETROIT - A roaring 20's theme is sure to make a memorable fundraising event to benefit patients at Josephine Ford Cancer Center.

The Jump, Jive and Wail Roaring 20's event held 6 p.m. Feb. 7, at the historic and refurbished Westin Book Cadillac in Detroit, will benefit the Josephine Ford Cancer Center Catherine M. Price Cancer Relief Endowment. The fund assists cancer patients who lack the resources to cover their cancer treatment expenses.

The evening includes a cocktail reception and strolling dinner. Fox 2 news anchor Huel Perkins will serve as Master of Ceremonies.

Entertainment will be provided by The Rhythm Society Orchestra, a 15 piece orchestra specializing in true vintage swing music. The band was nominated for best Big Band/Swing artists at the Detroit Music Awards.

Roaring 20's festive attire is encouraged.

David and Cynthia Hempstead (of Grosse Pointe Park) will be honored at the event for their philanthropic efforts throughout southeast Michigan.

Tickets for the event are $125, $250, $500 and $1,000.

DETROIT-Henry Ford Hospice is seeking volunteers who want to make a positive contribution to people in need. Volunteers are needed to offer companionship and family support for loved ones who are terminally ill in the patient's home, nursing home facilities or in the hospital.

Opportunities are available throughout southeast Michigan to help with the adult and pediatric hospice programs, the hospice residence as well as SandCastles, a grief support program for children and their families. Flexible schedules are provided.

Henry Ford Hospice Offers Bereavement Support Series

DETROIT - Henry Ford Hospice is offering a bereavement support group series in Dearborn, Grosse Pointe and Sterling Heights to assist those dealing with a loss. The series will be held:

6:30- 8p.m. on Tuesdays, Jan. 27 through March 3rd at 19401 Hubbard Drive, Dearborn.
7- 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 21 through Feb. 25th at First English Lutheran Church, 800 Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods.
6:30 - 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Jan. 21 through Feb. 18th at Atria Shorehaven, 14560 Lakeside Circle, Sterling Heights.

Coping With the Holidays Program Offered

DETROIT - Are you grieving a loved one and dreading the holidays? If so, Henry Ford Hospice is offering help with a free holiday grief workshop.

Participants can choose from the following two sessions held at Henry Ford Health System Fairlane Clinic, 19401 Hubbard, Dearborn:

• 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm, Tuesday, Nov. 18, Conference Room B

• 11:00 am-1:30 pm, Friday, Nov. 21, Conference Room A/B

The program will cover coping with the holidays for caregivers and families to help those that are experiencing challenges during this time. Participants will hear about common experiences of grief as well as ideas of how to best experience the holiday season.

Henry Ford Receives Funding From World Series Pitcher for Bereavement Camp

Nov. 3, 2008 CONTACT: Zoila Brown Zbrown1@hfhs.org DETROIT – Detroit may not have won the World Series, but local kids will receive a special gift from World Series All-Star Pitcher Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen. The SandCastles Grief Support Program, part of Henry Ford Hospice, has received a $100,000 gift from The Moyer Foundation to expand a bereavement camp for children and teens who have lost a loved one. SandCastles is the only grief support program in Michigan to receive funding from the foundation to continue the national Camp Erin expansion of bereavement camps for children and teens who have lost someone close to them. “Children inspire us every day to do what we do at The Moyer Foundation,” said co-founder Jamie Moyer, father of seven and starting pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 3 of the World Series. “Baseball gives me the opportunity to do what I do, but strong community involvement allows us to continue to expand Camp Erin to address this need and help more children. Working together with local communities, we can make a difference in the lives of grieving children and teens across the country.” Camp Erin is named in memory of Erin Metcalf of Woodinville, Washington, who developed liver cancer at the age of 15. Erin had a compassionate heart and when she was hospitalized she often expressed concern for the other children there as well as their siblings, who sometimes received little attention. In 2000, when Erin died at the age of 17, Jamie and Karen Moyer wished to honor Erin's memory and her caring spirit. Acknowledging her love ofchildren and her desire to help others, the Moyers felt that a griefcamp for children would be an appropriate tribute. The first Camp Erinwas established in Everett, Washington in 2002. Locally, the SandCastles grief support program holds an annual camp in the summer for grieving children and teens. The local camp will now be called Camp Erin and will allow SandCastles to expand the camp from about 100 children to about 150 children and teens who can benefit from the generosity of the Foundation. “We are honored to receive this funding and are so thankful to The Moyer Foundation for their generosity,” says Peggy Nielsen, manager of SandCastles. “This funding allows us to expand the camp and possibly hold special sessions for teenagers who are dealing with grief who we have found can especially benefit from the camp.” In addition to the yearly camp, the SandCastles Grief Support Program serves families with children and adolescents ages 3-18 in a year round community-based program. Since its inception in 1997, SandCastles has served almost 2000 families representing more than 5,400 people throughout southeast Michigan. SandCastles Offers Young Adults Support Group

DETROIT – Henry Ford Hospice-SandCastles Grief Support Program, is offering a new young adults group in St. Clair Shores for individual between the ages of 19 and 25 who are dealing with the death of a loved one.

Volunteers are also needed in St. Clair Shores to help children and their families cope with the loss of a loved one. Henry Ford Hospice-SandCastles provides a supportive environment for children and their families who have experienced a death in a year round community based program.

DETROIT – Henry Ford Hospice is offering a five week bereavement support group series entitled “The Journey through Grief.” The series will be held 6:30 - 8 p.m. on Wednesdays, Sept. 10-Oct. 8 at Atria Shorehaven, 14560 Lakeside Circle, Sterling Heights.

The facility is located across from JC Penney in Lakeside Circle. Parking is available in the front and back. The series is free to participants; however registration is required. Henry Ford Hospice Opens Inpatient Residence in Southfield

DETROIT - A ribbon cutting ceremony was held June 18 at the first full service Hospice Residence in Oakland County. Henry Ford Hospice-Residence Oakland located in the Lake Land Center in Southfield, is an innovative resource designed to provide a home-like environment with care provided round-the-clock for individuals with a life-expectancy of six months or less.
