HF Production System LEAN Training for Health Care

CONTACT:
Krista Hopson
Krista.Hopson@hfhs.org

The Henry Ford Production System LEAN Training for Health Care

DETROIT - The Henry Ford Production System LEAN training for health care takes place Sept. 16-17, 2010 at Henry Ford Health System

The two-day course is a didactic and hands-on introduction to LEAN management philosophy and manufacturing-based work rules and tools designed to prepare physicians, administrators, and technical support staff for the realities and potential successes of practicing in a LEAN environment. The sessions are not only oriented to laboratory medicine but also adapted to the processes encountered in clinical services as well.

The concept of focusing on design of work, across silos of control, according to defined rules of change and design as practiced in the manufacturing industry is very pertinent to all in healthcare. The challenge for leaders is to adapt these successful approaches, which engage the entire workforce, to our unique environment in health care.

Henry Ford has been doing that across the laboratories of the Henry Ford Health System through its Deming-inspired culture - the Henry Ford Production System. This approach is now being adopted in the clinical services of our Transplant Institute, Operating Room Services, Outpatient Clinics, Cardiac Surgery and Behavioral Services. The practical experiences over four years, especially the challenges and leadership required to change to that culture, are shared in the two-day LEAN training course.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

Describe and implement effective process improvements based on manufacturing base production principles

Adopt unique measurement tools based on the scientific method of data collection to identify and analyze defective processes in surgical pathology laboratories

Select leadership and organizational structures for successful transformation to implement LEAN as a continuously learning, evolving and improving workforce culture

Manage empowered teams of 'expert' workers

Understand how new technology can be adapted to promote and sustain LEAN concepts of work

The program consists of 15.5 CME hours of education class-time.

For a full course description, agenda and on-line registration, go to:
http://www.henryford.com/hfproductionsystem

Presented by Robert Reid and Eric Larson, Group Health Cooperative.

If Given a Choice, How Much and What Disease-Risk Feedback Would Participants Want? Presented by Barbara Biesecker, NHGRI.

Potential for Early Intervention; Parents' Views of Multiplex Testing for their Children. Presented by Ken Tercyak, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University.

The Multiplex Initiative investigated the interest level of healthy, young, insured adults in receiving genetic susceptibility testing for eight common conditions. The two-year study looked at how people who decided to take the test would interpret and use the results in making their own health care decisions in the future.

About 2,000 patients took part in the Multiplex Initiative. Of those, 266 agreed to do the free multiplex genetic testing which can detect common variants of genes that slightly alter the chances of acquiring particular diseases. Researchers at Henry Ford, a major health provider in metropolitan Detroit, randomly selected individuals between the ages of 25 and 40 to participate in the study.

The term "multiplex" refers to performing multiple genetic tests using the same blood sample. The test used for the study was designed to yield information about 15 different genes that play roles in type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and malignant melanoma.

On average, those who get tested in the Multiplex Initiative received results indicating that they carry four to 10 risk versions of individual genes. However, having a risk version of one of the 15 genes on the multiplex genetic test does not mean that a person is certain to get the condition - only that he or she might have a greater chance of developing the disorder. There are many things other than genetics that contribute to the risk of common diseases, including lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, smoking, and sun exposure.

Once enrolled, participants were asked to review information online about the multiplex genetic test and to decide whether they were interested in taking the test. Those who agreed to testing met with a research educator, who provided more information about the risks and benefits of testing and obtained the patient's written consent.

Test results were mailed to participants. Trained research educators called the participants to help them interpret and understand their results. The study also included follow-up interviews with participants three months after receiving their results.

To protect patient privacy, test results obtained during the Multiplex study were destroyed by Henry Ford Health System; they do not automatically become a part of participants' medical records. But participants who wanted to share their test results with their health care providers could do so.

The Multiplex Initiative study team included: Colleen McBride, Ph.D., senior investigator and chief of NHGRI's Social and Behavioral Research Branch; Lawrence Brody, Ph.D., senior investigator in the NHGRI Genome Technology Branch; Henry Ford epidemiologist Sharon Hensley Alford, Ph.D., M.P.H., who led the Detroit-based team; Eric B. Larson, M.D., M.P.H., executive director of the Group Health Center for Health Studies, who led the Seattle group; and Robert Reid, M.D., Ph.D., Group Health Cooperative's associate medical director for preventive care.

Learn more about the Multiplex Symposium at http://research.nhgri.nih.gov/Events/Multiplex/

While most are the result of the normal aging process, the number of people younger than 65 with hearing loss is growing due in part to the popularity of MP3 players and earbuds.

Hearing loss can affect people of all ages. According the American Academy of Audiology, the most common causes of hearing loss are genetic predispositions, ear diseases, noise exposure (music, industrial and military), ototoxic medicines and head trauma.

Hearing loss can make it difficult to hear a conversation in a noisy environment such as a restaurant, or cause constant ringing or pain in the ears.

Although most hearing loss is permanent, an audiologist can determine the best treatment to improve hearing, including hearing aids, assistive listening devices and hearing rehabilitation.

To learn more about the services and treatments offered at Henry Ford's Division of Audiology, visit www.henryford.com.
