		<title>The Speed of Life - Inside Detroit&amp;#8217;s Top ER</title>
			<link>http://www.henryford.com/body.cfm?id=46335&amp;amp;action=detail&amp;amp;ref=876</link>
<description>Oct. 13, 2008&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;CONTACT:Dwight Angell&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9; &amp;#13;&amp;#10;(313) 876-2882&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9;&amp;#9; &amp;#13;&amp;#10;dangell1@hfhs.org&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;Each year the doctors and nurses of the Henry Ford Hospital Emergency Department see nearly 100,000 patients. With diseases and disorders that range from trauma, strokes, severe infection to heart attacks, the people who become patients here can have some of the most complicated and life-threatening problems. &amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;It&amp;#8217;s the reason why Henry Ford is one of only a handful of level-one trauma centers in the state. It&amp;#8217;s also why residents, interns and fellows come from all over the world to this place &amp;#8211; to learn from the very best, in a setting unlike any other.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;The program, Minds of Medicine, follows researchers through this unique approach. Minds of Medicine: The Speed of Life - Inside Detroit&amp;#8217;s Top ER airs 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct.18, on WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 and repeated 12:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 20.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;It is the latest in a series of medical shows locally produced in cooperation with WXYZ-TV/Channel 7 and Henry Ford Health System. Hosted by Paul W. Smith, morning radio personality for WJR AM 760, the program provides an inside look at the doctors and nurses at one of the nation&amp;#8217;s top-rated hospitals.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;Some examples:&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#8226;&amp;#9;Dr. Emanuel Rivers has been in the emergency department and intensive care for more than 25 years. He is board certified in critical care, internal medicine and emergency medicine. He is also the first doctor in the storied history of Henry Ford Hospital to be elected to the Institute of Medicine, National Academies of Sciences &amp;#8211; an honor given to the likes of Albert Einstein and Madame Curie. He was given this honor because he is at the forefront of research for one of the ER&amp;#8217;s most dangerous visitors &amp;#8211; sepsis. &amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;Simply put, sepsis is a serious bacterial infection of the body&amp;#8217;s tissues. It can occur through a wound, insect or animal bite or another infection like pneumonia. With few symptoms, it can quickly shut down organs and cause permanent, even fatal results. In fact, every year over 200,000 patients die because of sepsis. As a leader in research, Henry Ford have created a standard of care for this killer &amp;#8211; published in the New England Journal of Medicine and adopted around the world. &amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#8226;&amp;#9;Henry Ford Medical Group doctors have helped create the national standard for delivering angioplasty &amp;#8211; 60 minutes or less after the arrival of a heart attack. Because of their network of physicians and facilities, any of Henry Ford&amp;#8217;s Medical Center ERs can deliver this standard &amp;#8211; making them one of the best in the country. &amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#8226;&amp;#9;Being one of the country&amp;#8217;s busiest and most experienced emergency rooms means having doctors and nurses trained to handle any type of case. In addition to heart attacks and accidents of all types, Henry Ford has been recognized with the joint commission&amp;#8217;s Gold Seal of Approval for their ability to deliver critical treatment for stroke at 4 local emergency departments. They are the only health system in the country given this distinction. Additionally, because of research done here, they can offer patients new options to stop and minimize a stroke&amp;#8217;s long-term effects.&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;&amp;#13;&amp;#10;</description>
