Henry Ford Holds Free Program on Menopause and Heart Disease

DETROIT - February is American Heart Month, a good time to share information about menopause and heart disease. Learn more as the providers from the Henry Ford Heart & Vascular Institute give you tips and secrets to decrease your risk of heart disease.

The free program is part of a series of seminars hosted by Henry Ford Women's Health Services aimed at addressing the physical, mental and emotional aspects of menopause. Future topics offered in the next few months include, osteoporosis and acupuncture.

Pelvic Pain Specialist Joins Henry Ford

Oct. 8, 2008 CONTACT: Zoila Brown Zbrown1@hfhs.org DETROIT – Husam Abed, M.D., who specializes in pelvic disorders, has joined Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Abed has a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, overactive bladder and other pelvic disorders. He received his fellowship training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at the University of New Mexico and completed his post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Dr. Abed has received medical students and residents teaching awards from the school of medicine at the University of New Mexico. He is also fluent in Arabic. ###

Henry Ford Hospital Names New Chair of Women’s Health

DETROIT - Adnan Munkarah, M.D., a specialist in gynecologic cancer including ovarian and uterine cancer, has been named chair of the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Women's Health for the Henry Ford Medical Group and the Hospital and Health Network. Dr. Munkarah is clinical professor at Wayne State School of Medicine and is well known throughout Michigan for his expertise in the subspecialty of gynecologic oncology which includes treatment for tumors in the ovary, uterus, vagina and vulva.

Educated at the American University of Beirut, Dr. Munkarah trained in both internal medicine, and obstetrics and gynecology at the Detroit Medical Center. After completing his oncology fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, he returned to Detroit where he directed the division of gynecologic oncology at Wayne State School of Medicine and Hutzel Women’s Hospital and also served in leadership roles at Karmanos Cancer Center.

Most recently, Dr. Munkarah has been on leave from Wayne State to serve as the director of obstetrics and gynecology at King Faisal Hospital in Saudi Arabia. At Wayne State he won teaching awards and is listed among “Best Doctors in America”. He has maintained a strong interest in research and has an impressive record of both peer reviewed publications and invited lectureships here and abroad. Dr. Munkarah assumes the leadership role from former chair, Ronald Strickler, M.D. who provided leadership of the department for more than a decade. Dr. Strickler will continue his role as director of reproductive endocrinology at Henry Ford Hospital and Medical Center, a field in which he is a national expert. ###

Henry Ford Nurse Named a Fellow of the International

DETROIT - Mary Kay Smith, RN, a lactation consultant at Henry Ford Hospital, was named a fellow by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

Those selected have made significant contributions to the profession of lactation consulting and to their professional organization. In this, the inaugural year, only 16 of ILCA's 4,700 members worldwide have earned the title.

Smith has been assisting breastfeeding women for more than 20 years, first as a La Leche League Leader beginning in 1982 and as a board certified lactation consultant since 1988. She is also a registered nurse and certified childbirth educator. Currently she belongs to Michigan Association of Lactation Consultants and serves as its newsletter editor.

There are over 17,000 International Board Certified Lactation Consultants in over 60 countries around the world. IBCLCs are health care professionals who specialize in the clinical management of breastfeeding and work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice.

Henry Ford Expands Women's Health Services in Downriver Region

Henry Ford Medical Center-Woodhaven, located at 22505 Allen Road will be offering obstetric services beginning in September. Deliveries will be at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. Munther Alaiwat, M. D., a physician who has specialized in obstetrics and gynecology in the downriver area for ten years, will be offering obstetrics services at Henry Ford Medical Center-Woodhaven. Other services provided include routine well women care, menopause treatment, female urinary incontinence treatment and minimally invasive surgical treatments, including robotic surgery for women and alternatives to hysterectomy. Service Chief of Women's Health at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital Named

Dr. Davidson who has served as division head of Women’s Health for the Henry Ford Oakland Region for 19 years has been with Henry Ford Health System since 1985. “His dedication to quality patient care, education and research has earned him the highest respect in the community which has recognized him yearly as an area top doctor,” says Ronald Strickler, M.D., chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Henry Ford Health System.
