The next year holds many changes for the healthcare industry: the implementation of higher spending caps and flexible spending account limits, preparation for ICD-10 and health insurance exchanges, and further consolidation from health systems and insurance companies. Here are 50 people with considerable sway over healthcare policy, operations and opinion in 2013. Nancy Schlichting is CEO of Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Mich. She is credited with leading the health system through a dramatic financial turnaround and for implementing award-winning patient safety, customer service and diversity initiatives. (Full Story)

Extra sleep may help reduce chronic pain (New York Daily News)

If you suffer from chronic pain -- such as headaches or backaches -- a small new study finds that getting extra sleep every night could help give you some relief. "If you are already sleeping eight hours a night, you probably don't need more sleep," researcher Dr. Thomas Roth, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, told WebMD. "If you spend six hours in bed a night, spend eight -- preferably nine," he says. Full Story

Chief Experience Officer: Listener-in-chief (Hospitals and Health Networks)

Upheaval in health care isn't just transforming traditional C-suite positions in hospitals. Growing accountability for clinical and patient satisfaction outcomes across the care continuum is creating a need for new leadership roles. The chief patient experience officer — or CXO — is one such emerging position. Denise Beaudoin and Sven Gierlinger share responsibility for managing patient satisfaction and experience, including monitoring outcomes and assisting departments in improving performance, at Henry Ford Health System's five acute care hospitals and one inpatient psychiatric unit, a 1,200-physician medical group, a 1,700-physician medical network, 32 outpatient clinics and a managed care plan serving 648,000 members. Full Story

Stricter adherence to preliminary screening method could reduce unnecessary CT scans (Medical Xpress)

A Henry Ford Hospital study has found that better use of commonly accepted diagnostic guidelines for detecting cervical spine injuries could reduce unnecessary CT scans and spare patients from radiation exposure. "While imaging testing is an important aspect of patient care, we have to make sure that these tests are ordered appropriately," says Brent Griffith, M.D., chief resident of Radiology at Henry Ford and the study's lead author. Full Story

With Bullying, What's a Parent to Do? (U.S. News and World Report)

When kids have academic problems, report cards make that clear to parents. But detecting that a child is being bullied, and then knowing how to react, may not be so clear-cut. A child who's being bullied may be more anxious and fearful, perhaps wanting to avoid school and social settings, according to Victor Gardner, a child and adolescent psychologist with the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Full Story

But Brenda admits when she was diagnosed about 15 years ago, she tried to ignore it. Goins started visiting Kelly Mann – a nurse practitioner at Henry Ford Health System. “I have diabetes, too,” said Mann. “Not only do I teach them what’s necessary for them to be healthy, but I live it each and every day of my life as well.” (Video) Full Story

Wyandotte Hospital President and CEO Retires (Wyandotte Patch)

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital President and CEO Jim Sexton officially retired Friday after 10 years of service. Sexton said he originally wanted to work for one more year before retiring. However, with large-scale projects on the horizon for the hospital, such as conversion to electronic medical records, he said it would be best to have a successor start ahead of such work, rather than step in and have to take control of ongoing projects. Full Story

Healthcare leaders are inundated with pleas and demands from payers, the government, their boards, and even their patients to be more accountable to them in cost, quality, and patient safety. Nancy Schlichting, CEO at Henry Ford Health System, a Detroit-based organization with $4.22 billion in revenue, says much of her leadership style is rooted in seeking out common values and providing constant feedback on how well her team is meeting its self-imposed targets. Full Story

Hints of a more virulent, mutating West Nile virus emerge (Washington Post)

The West Nile virus epidemic of 2012, the worst in a decade, may be notorious for yet another reason: The virus, in some cases, is attacking the brain more aggressively than in the past, raising the specter that it may have mutated into a nastier form, say two neurologists who have extensive experience dealing with the illness. Elizabeth Angus from Henry Ford Hospital Detroit, has noticed brain damage in young, previously healthy patients, not just in older, sicker ones — another change from past years. Full Story

Charles Bonnet Syndrome Sufferers See Visions (Hour Detroit)

Her visions started in the desert, a place known for mirages. But what Miriam Zeidman first saw was anything but a watery, undefined image in the distance. “I said to my sister, ‘My God! Look at all the apartment buildings!’ ” Zeidman recalls. Zeidman was suffering from Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS), a little-known affliction that is thought by experts to arise from the most common culprit of vision loss in aging adults. “It’s kind of like looking through frosted glass,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk, an ophthalmologist with Henry Ford Hospital. Full Story

To Lose Weight, It Helps to Train the Brain First (Time)

Weight loss might be more lasting if dieters get the hang of certain healthy habits—such as eating mindfully and taking brief walks—before actively trying to lose weight. The training program also may have fostered a sense of accountability and resolve heading into the weight-loss phase, says Lindsey Battistelli, manager of the weight management center at Henry Ford Health System, in Wyandotte, Mich. “It takes effort to maintain a weight loss,” Battistelli says. “You can’t go back to doing what you were doing before. You can let yourself indulge here and there, as long as you’re willing to have it as part of a compromise.” Full Story

Tom Walsh: Blockbuster merger of Beaumont and Henry Ford health systems about survival (Detroit Free Press)

Here's a multiple-choice question about the big hospital hookup plan unveiled Wednesday by the Beaumont and Henry Ford health systems, which plan to join 10 hospitals and 41,000 employees in a giant not-for-profit marriage. Is it: (a.) Scary? (b.) A necessary survival move? (c.) An opportunity to forge a medical supersystem with cachet to rival names like Mayo, Johns Hopkins or Cleveland Clinic? (d.) All of the above? "We have a tsunami coming with Medicare," Henry Ford CEO Nancy Schlichting said of the aging baby boom generation. Tom Walsh does an in-depth report. Full Story

More coverage:
Henry Ford, Beaumont Hospitals announce $6.4 billion merger (The Oakland Press)
Beaumont, Henry Ford looking to merge into $6.4B health system (WJBK-TV) (Video)
Henry Ford, Beaumont announce plan to form new $6.4 billion organization (WDIV-TV) (Video)

One strategy that has gained momentum is offering hotel-like amenities, such as large, private rooms and massage therapy. Gerard van Grinsven, president and CEO of Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, emphasizes the importance of these amenities and wellness services to patient-centered care. Full Story

Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System launched its "No Harm Campaign" in 2008, a system-wide approach to patient safety that has a goal of reducing adverse events by 50 percent by 2013. HFHS is already more than halfway there — it has reduced harm events by 34 percent so far. William Conway, MD, senior vice president and chief quality officer of HFHS and CMO of Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, and Sue Hawkins, senior vice president of performance excellence at HFHS, describe how HFHS created a patient safety program that spans five hospitals and numerous other sites of care. Full Story

8 Ways Henry Ford Health System Improved Its Data Breach Response Plan (Becker's Hospital Review)

Henry Ford Health System in Detroit is a large and well-established health system. Unfortunately, like a growing number of healthcare organizations, Henry Ford has experienced a few data breaches. Obviously, no healthcare organization wants to suffer a data breach, which can put their patients and the organization itself at risk financially and non-financially. In a webinar hosted by the American Hospital Association and co-sponsored by ID Experts, Meredith Phillips, chief privacy officer for Henry Ford Health System discussed why the plan HFHS had was not effective and what they did to improve the health system's emphasis on data security and privacy as well as their data breach response plan. Full Story

Talking Points (HOUR Detroit)

The man in the exam chair at the Henry Ford voice clinic explains his dilemma, saying in a raspy voice that he thinks he has something in his throat. There’s the theory that he might have breathed in glass particles while standing close to a car window that shattered. Dr. Robert Stachler, an ear, nose, and throat doctor and specialist in voice and swallowing disorders, discovers something more prosaic: a lesion on one of the vocal cords likely caused by chronic acid reflux. This is the highly technical nature of Stachler’s job: Using intricate cameras and a keen eye, he can identify underlying medical issues that affect the way we feel and sound when we talk. Full Story

With only one functioning vocal cord, Matthew Storey’s voice never developed — a side effect of the efforts doctors took to keep Matthew alive at birth. Sitting in a coffee shop in Royal Oak recently, Matthew, now a senior at Oakland University, chatted relatively clearly as the result of a special surgery he received last November at Henry Ford Hospital. Matthew’s experiences don’t surprise Dr. Robert Stachler, an ear, nose, and throat doctor and a specialist in vocal disorders at Henry Ford Hospital, who performed Matthew’s surgery. Full Story

HPV Infection May Extend Cancer Patient Lives (Daily Rx)

The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes a number of malignancies, including head and neck and cervical cancers. Oddly enough, being infected with the virus may help those living with oral cancer. Researchers believe that having HPV improves the lifespan of African Americans who have throat cancer, compared to African Americans who do not have the virus. These are the unexpected findings of a group of researchers, led by Maria J. Worsham, Ph.D., director of research in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit. Full Story

New surgery reduces stroke risk in people with atrial fibrillation (Detroit Free Press)

Patients with atrial fibrillation who can't take blood thinners for the heartbeat irregularity have a new minimally invasive option to reduce their risk of a stroke. A team at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital used the approach recently on the first Michigan patients thought to undergo the Lariat procedure. More than 3 million Americans have atrial fibrillation, and 1 in 10 of them can't take blood thinners because the drugs can cause bleeding complications. The procedure is considered a major advance for these patients because there are no other treatment options, according to Dr. William W. O'Neill, medical director of the Center for Structural Heart Disease at Henry Ford Hospital. "Now, we can definitely limit the risk of stroke in these patients,'' he said. Full Story

Antioxidants, dietary supplements and high-tech brain imaging are among some of the novel strategies that may help detect, treat and even prevent noise-induced hearing loss and tinnitus among American troops, according to researchers at Detroit's Henry Ford Hospital.
Men more likely to have kidney stones (UPI)

More men than women develop kidney stones, but women are more than twice as likely to be afflicted with urinary tract infections, U.S. researchers say. Lead author Jesse Sammon of Henry Ford's Vattikuti Urology Institute and colleagues at the Henry Ford Hospital said the study involved nearly 400,000 adult patients hospitalized with infected urolithiasis -- kidney or urinary stones -- from 1999 to 2009. Full Story

With the patient's experience moving more and more to the forefront, are hospitals going to increasingly resemble hotels, complete with fancy food and a flat screen in every room? At Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital, in Michigan, that scenario is quickly becoming reality. Last week, the forward-thinking provider unveiled a shiny new 1,500-square-foot greenhouse on its campus, complete with a staff farmer and an attached education center. Full Story

Perched on an 8-foot ladder, Michelle Lutz reaches into the leafy tops of the pole-bean vines growing toward the glass roof of Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital's new $1-million hydroponic greenhouse. "The first ones!" the resident farmer declares, holding up several young pods. It is surprisingly prolific. Hospital chefs no longer have to buy microgreens or basil, their most-used herb, because the greenhouse produces all they need. "If I manage this properly," Lutz says, indicating her 12-by-20-foot hydroponic table, "this will produce 15,000 heads of lettuce in a year. For 240 square feet, that's pretty incredible." Full Story

New Asthma Treatment Successful but Costly (ABC News)

For hundreds of severe asthmatics who have undergone bronchial thermoplasty – the first nondrug treatment for asthma approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2010 – the results have been life-changing. However, the dramatic improvement comes with a hefty price tag. Dr. Michael Simoff, director of bronchoscopy and interventional pulmonology at Henry Ford Hospital in Michigan, has had 30 to 40 patients referred to him over the past six months for the procedure. He's had to turn many patients away because insurance will not pay for the treatment and the patients can't afford it. "It puts us in a difficult situation," said Simoff. "My hands are tied, because we see people, we evaluate them and see that they're good candidates, but they don't fill the criteria to be in a study." Full Story

Henry Ford Hospital surgeons perform first 'LARIAT' procedure to reduce stroke risk (MLive)

A team of heart doctors at Henry Ford Hospital is the first in Michigan to perform a new catheter-based procedure that limits the risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation who cannot take blood-thinning medications, according to the hospital. The Henry Ford team, led by Dr. Mayra Guerrero, director of the Structural Heart Disease Fellowship, and Dr. Claudio Schuger, director Cardiac Electrophysiology Service, in the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute, recently performed the new procedure on three Detroit-area patients, according to the hospital. Full Story

Henry Ford aims to sow green space into upgrade (Crain's Detroit Business)

While Henry Ford Health System's Detroit flagship hospital has grown over the past 100 years -- a recently completed $300 million upgrade and face-lift features 80 private rooms and new operating-room suites -- green space was something the 33-acre hospital campus had more of in the 1920s than now. The hospital system hopes to rectify that in a project that could add $500 million in development at its main campus to the previously announced $1 billion in hoped-for projects on 300 acres the system owns or wants to develop south of West Grand Boulevard in Midtown. The plan is still early in development. John Popovich Jr., CEO of Henry Ford Hospital, said it most likely would include a six-story building, a parking structure and demolition of some buildings to create more green space at an early cost estimate of more than $500 million. "The old hospital was designed with more green spaces and ponds around it. It was built in over time" as the hospital slowly expanded to the 802 beds it now has, Popovich said. "We will open up some of that and add more green space." Full Story

Reluctance in Some States Over Medicaid Expansion (New York Times)

Millions of poor people could still be left without medical insurance under the national health care law if states take an option granted by the Supreme Court and decide not to expand their Medicaid programs, state officials and health policy experts said Friday. Republican officials in more than a half-dozen states said they opposed expanding Medicaid or had serious doubts about it, even though the federal government would pick up all the costs in the first few years and at least 90 percent of the expenses after that. Nancy M. Schlichting, chief executive of the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, said she “absolutely will lobby” for the expansion of Medicaid. She said she expected Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican, to support the expansion, but she added, “he may have trouble” getting it through the Michigan Legislature. Full Story

HUD awards $6.9 million so Presbyterian Villages, United Methodist Retirement Communities can build senior apartments along Detroit River (Crain's Detroit Business)

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a $6.9 million grant to two local nonprofits to help fund the second phase of a senior community under development on the east front of the Detroit River. Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and Chelsea-based United Methodist Retirement Communities Inc. plan to begin construction on the $7.5 million, 43,000-square-foot apartment building during the first quarter of 2013. The building will have 50 independent-living, affordable senior apartments as part of the Rivertown neighborhood development and is expected to open in the spring 2014. It will be just east of the nonprofits’ $27.5 million phase-one development — an affordable, assisted-living complex with 80 one-bedroom apartments for seniors and the Henry Ford/PVM Center for Senior Independence. That first phase — an adaptive reuse of a former Parke Davis building across from the UAW/GM Center for Human Resources, on the east riverfront — is expected to open by the end of this year. The National Affordable Housing Trust and its investors are vested in the project, along with Presbyterian Villages, United Methodist Retirement Communities and Henry Ford Health System. Full Story

Henry Ford Medical Center’s Cottage Hospital will be home to a brand-new development, in partnership with American House Senior Living Communities and REDICO, a national real estate company based in Southfield, which owns American House. All parties met in March, agreeing to build 78 units on the second and third floors of Cottage Hospital. Construction will likely begin in the fall, and should be complete late in 2013. The second and third floors are being sold to American House, says Paul Szilagyi, Henry Ford’s regional vice president of Primary Care & Medical Centers, and will respectively house 38 and 40 units. Full Story

Tom Walsh: By hosting medical meetings, Detroit can get healthier (Detroit Free Press)

Medical meetings where top doctors, specialists and hospital administrators convene can deliver huge economic benefits to the places that host them. How huge? About $9 billion worth of economic spending in 63 U.S. markets during the eight-year period from now to 2020. Bob Riney and the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau aim to change that picture, starting today. Riney, president and COO of Henry Ford Health System -- and also current chair of Detroit's convention bureau -- is launching a new medical meetings initiative today in a speech to the Michigan Health & Hospital Association board of trustees meeting on Mackinac Island. "We want to get some early wins. It's time to try to influence some of this medical meeting business and get a piece of it to the Detroit area," Riney told me Monday. Full Story

Putting health care on the right track (Washington Post)

Obamacare is helping our nation achieve health care that is excellent, accessible to all and affordable. In the 17 months that I led the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), I saw how this law is helping tens of millions of families and is finally putting our health-care system on the right track. Some people believe that the only way to address this problem is to shift costs to consumers. Obamacare has a far better approach: reduce health-care costs by providing better care and promoting better health. The Henry Ford Health System in Detroit has documented savings of $10 million per year from its efforts to improve patient safety. Full Story
