Henry Ford Cancer Institute is one of the largest cancer institutions in Michigan and provides a variety of services including consultative and continuing cancer care services, radiation therapy, surgical oncology, medical oncology and cancer support services. More than 1,300 fellowship trained oncology experts, researchers and other specialists provide care in our five hospitals and multiple outpatient locations in southeast and south central Michigan, anchored by our flagship Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Powered by the success of our recent White House Cancer Moonshot visit, and the selection of Henry Ford by the National Institutes of Health as one of only seven sites in the country leading a molecular genetic "All for Us" screening program, the Henry Ford Precision Medicine Program launched and is quickly becoming the largest program of its kind in the state, offering molecular fingerprinting on over 500 potentially targetable genes in the fight against cancer.
Education and Training
The Henry Ford Cancer Institute aims to further the training of undergraduate, graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. We support and host many conferences and annual research symposiums, including (breast, head and neck, urology, kidney, etc)
Our team of fellowship-trained surgeons specializing in cancer is one of the largest and most experienced in the country offering coordinated care and cutting-edge surgical and procedural options. Doctors come from around the world to learn new surgical techniques from our experienced surgeons. We are a national leader in minimally invasive robotic surgery techniques. Many of these procedures are trialed and implemented first by our surgeons. We offer advanced robotic surgery for prostate, kidney, gynecologic, lung, liver and head and neck cancers. We led the development of national guidelines for the treatment of metastatic brain tumors, which have been adopted by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Also, we were the first in Michigan to offer patients a full-field intra-operative MRI, which allows for nearly 100% brain tumor removal during surgery, and minimally invasive (laser) brain surgery for brain tumors.

The collective expertise of our radiation oncologists, physicists and other team members is recognized across the nation. We are known for developing the most advanced cancer therapies, including radiosurgery, and were the first in the world to offer MRI-guided radiation therapy with the View Ray MRIdian Linac. This MRI-guided radiation is transformational allowing us to treat and help cancer patients in completely new ways. With this new system, it is now possible to image the treatment area and deliver radiation at the same time – targeting the tumor and more effectively protecting the surrounding healthy tissue. In addition to the View Ray MRIdian Linac, we were first in North America with the EDGE, stereotactic radiosurgery platform. We also were the first in the world to develop radiosurgery to treat spinal cancer and noncancerous spinal tumors. We offer radiation treatment at several locations across southeast and south central Michigan.

Our medical oncology team includes 34 board certified hematology/oncology physicians, with nearly 20 of those providers subspecializing in various types of cancer, phase 1 clinical trials, bone marrow transplant and other services, along with dozens of doctorate level researchers.
The Henry Ford Clinical Trials office is one the most comprehensive resources of its kind in the nation, enrolling approximately XXX patients in cancer clinical trials in 2017/per year* With more than 200 ongoing clinical trials, the Henry Ford Cancer Institute features a clinical research support system that encompasses the disciplines of Medical Oncology, Surgery, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Investigational Drug Services, Social Work, Dietary and Behavioral Health. In addition to participating in multiple industry-sponsored trials, we maintain active memberships with the NCI cooperative groups, Southwest Oncology Group, NRG Oncology Group, Alliance, and Clinical Trials Support Unit. Henry Ford Cancer Institute is proud to offer more patient-centered therapeutic clinical trials for brain cancer than any other center in Michigan.
Our researchers apply their findings to clinical practice quickly - resulting in new, effective patient treatment. We rank 21st among independent hospitals in the U.S. in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Our cancer researchers receive about $35 million in external grants annually. We host the world’s second-largest brain tumor bank, as well as a significant biorepository for precision medicine. The Henry Ford Cancer Institute is making significant advances in the following areas: disparities and population health research, prostate cancer, gynecological cancers, brain cancer, radiation oncology, radiology, and drug discovery.

Cancer Support Services
Our Supportive Oncology Services division is an entity which unites social workers, complementary and integrative medicine professionals, physical and occupational therapists, financial and life skills counselors and many other patient support networks into a unified resource for all cancer patients system-wide. We received all 7 of 7 possible commendations - with highest honor distinctions - from the Commission on Cancer for our clinical care while also achieving record enrollment numbers in our newly revamped Survivorship Program.
