The wheels of research continue to spin. HFH will be well-represented at SAEM in sunny Indianapolis this year. We will be delivering 5 didactic sessions and 11 abstracts presentations (mostly oral) over the 3 days conference. Just search the conference App SAEM18 for Henry Ford and you’ll find the times and locations.
We will be beginning our first studies within the Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN) later in 2018. SIREN is funded by the National Institutes of Health and will coordinate phase 3 multicenter trials relevant emergency medicine in the areas of acute neurological, heart, lung and blood disorders. It is replacing the former Neurological Emergencies Treatment Trials network (NETT). If you’d like to join us our Hub a trial site, send us an email. Upcoming trials include a traumatic brain injury trial testing therapy guided by brain oxygenation monitoring and hyperbaric oxygen for traumatic brain injury. More trials relevant to management of acute chest pain and cardiac arrest are being considered in the pipeline.
We recently received funding from the FOCUS foundation to expand our public health outreach. Through these funds, we will be expanding HIV screening and adding Hepatitis C screening for the patients we serve in Detroit. We are also partnering with WSU to create heat maps of neighborhoods throughout Wayne County with the highest burden of hypertension and other major cardiovascular risks (example pic below). We’ll use the maps to overlay EMS data on cardiac arrests, strokes, and more to fine tune neighborhoods where interventions may have the most impact. Stay tuned.
