About Me

I specialize in Deep Brain Stimulation, Trigeminal Neuralgia, and Epilepsy Surgery.

Dr. Schwalb obtained his BA in Classical Greek summa cum laude from CUNY Brooklyn College, spurring a lasting interest in how the structure of language influences thought. He obtained his MD from Yale University, where he was named a Farr Scholar, one of five recipients of the medical school’s highest thesis award. He completed his surgical internship at Johns Hopkins University. He completed his Neurosurgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania with an infolded fellowship in spine surgery. He then completed a fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery with Andres Lozano, MD, PhD at the University of Toronto, during which time he also obtained additional training in epilepsy and peripheral nerve surgery.

After fellowship, he was Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester for 3 ½ years before being recruited to Henry Ford Health System in January 2009. He is currently the Surgical Director of the Movement Disorder & Comprehensive Epilepsy Centers and a Research Scientist in the Center for Health Policy and Health Services.

He is well published in his field and has given numerous presentations and lectureships. He is an active member of the Movement Disorder Society and the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ASSFN). He serves on the Professional Advisory Board of the Michigan Parkinson Foundation.  He is the current Co-Chair of the Functional Neurosurgery Working Group of the Parkinson’s Study Group and Secretary/Treasurer of the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Pain.

Philosophy

My goal is to provide a comprehensive evaluation to accurately diagnose what is causing your symptoms and provide you and your family with as much information as I can to help you make an informed decision about whether surgery is the right decision for you. If you decide to go forward with surgery, I try to provide the best and most compassionate surgical and postsurgical care possible. If you do not decide to proceed with surgery, I try to help coordinate care and obtain resources for you and your family. All care is coordinated with your other physicians, whether inside or outside of Henry Ford Health System.
