Sweet and Spicy Turnip Fries

Ingredients

  • 4 to 5 medium turnips, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch matchsticks, yielding 6 cups turnip strips
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons cornmeal
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Place turnip strips in a large bowl. Add oil and toss to coat. In a small dish, combine cornmeal, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. Sprinkle spice mixture over turnip sticks and toss to coat. Place two large baking sheets in preheated oven for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove pans from oven and divided turnip fries between preheated pans. Bake for 15 minutes. Turn turnips over, rotate pans and bake an additional 5 to 7 minutes or until browned. Remove from oven and season with salt.
