Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration

Thyroid Fine Needle Aspiration is a procedure where ultrasound is used to locate a nodule or solid area in the thyroid and obtain samples for diagnostic testing.

Preparation

• At Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital this is performed in the Ultrasound department and uses the preparation information that follows. For other locations, you will receive preparation information from the Interventional Radiology department at your location in advance of your scheduled appointment.
• You must be off any medication that is an anticoagulant (Motrin, Aspirin, Heparin, Coumadin or Plavix) for five days prior to this procedure.
• Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment for your blood draw, or have it done the night before.
• Bring a prescription from your doctor.
• You may need blood work prior to the procedure.

Procedure

• You will lie on an exam table with your neck slightly tilted back for a short period of time.
• A non-greasy gel will be applied to your skin during the exam.
• The sonographer will use a hand-held transducer (probe) against your neck to obtain images of the nodule or solid area in your thyroid gland.
• The sonographer then shows the radiologist the nodule or solid area.
• The radiologist sterilizes the area and then numbs the area with Lidocaine to aid in any discomfort the procedure causes.
• The radiologist then places a small needle within the area of interest and obtains samples.
• The specimen is then sent for testing.

Considerations

Let the technologist know:

• If you are on any blood thinners.
• If you have had any previous surgery.
• If you have difficulty lying flat on your back.
• Please bring a list of any medications.
