What’s Needed Before Gender-affirming Surgery

Clinical criteria (WPATH Standards of Care, Version 8)

  • Persistent, documented gender incongruence
  • Capacity to consent
  • Age 18 or older (for the services listed)
  • Any co-occurring physical or mental health conditions reasonably well controlled
  • One supporting letter from a qualified health professional
  • For genital surgery only: six months of a stable hormone regimen if hormones are prescribed — unless hormone therapy is not desired or is medically contraindicated
