Flu is a serious contagious disease that can lead to hospitalization and even death. The best way to protect yourself against the flu is vaccination. Anyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated, which takes up to two weeks for protection to develop.
Vaccination is especially important for people at higher risk of flu, including health care personnel and close contacts of children younger than 6 months, pregnant women and people with chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease, asthma, diabetes or a weakened immune system. Even healthy people, if not vaccinated, can get sick enough to miss work or school for a significant amount of time.
Common flu symptoms include:
- Sore Throat
- Muscle Aches
The biggest misconception about vaccination is it gives you the flu. A flu shot cannot cause flu illness. The flu viruses contained in a flu shot are inactivated (killed), which means they cannot cause infection. Vaccination is safe to receive; mild side effects include a sore arm, mild fever or achiness.
