Secondary Bariatric Endoscopy

These procedures are corrective therapies for patients who have had problems or have regained weight after Roux-en-Y bariatric surgery.

Because they are minimally invasive procedures, patients can continue working toward their weight loss and fitness goals without the potential complications and extended recovery times that can come with an open surgery. They are often covered by insurance plans and require a doctor’s referral.

Procedure types

  • EDGE Procedure (Endoscopic ultrasound-directed transgastric ERCP)

This minimally invasive procedure is for bariatric surgery patients who have problems related to the bile ducts, pancreas or gall bladder. It allows the physician to access the closed-off section of the stomach without traditional surgery.

    What to expect

The procedure is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. Your doctor will give you specific preparation instructions ahead of time, which you will need to follow before the procedure.

    During the procedure

The gastroenterologist uses ultrasound to help guide the placement of a small tube (stent) to connect the closed-off area of the stomach with the part of the stomach being used to digest food. Once the two stomach sections are connected, the gastroenterologist can drain the bile or pancreatic duct and use a specialized endoscope to remove gallstones internally.

    After the procedure

After the procedure you will be monitored in our recovery room with plans to be discharged home.

  • Laparoscopic-Assisted ERCP

    What to expect

The procedure is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia. Your doctor will give you specific preparation instructions ahead of time, which you will need to follow before the procedure.

    During the procedure

The procedure is performed in the operating room with a surgeon and gastroenterologist. The surgeon allows us to access the bypassed stomach so that the bile or pancreatic duct can be reached.

    After the procedure

This procedure may require an overnight stay in the hospital following the procedure.
