Residential Treatment for Substance Use Disorder
If you’re living with a substance use disorder, it might seem hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel. But there is hope. For many people, residential care is one of the first steps toward healing.
Residential substance use disorder treatment offers 24/7 care in a safe, supportive environment. You stay in one of our comfortable, calming facilities while receiving medical and therapeutic care.
At Henry Ford Health, our experienced, specialized addiction medicine team provides your care. Even if you’ve tried substance use treatments in the past, we know your recovery is possible. We create a welcoming, compassionate, stigma-free environment to help you find hope and long-term change.
Who needs residential substance use disorder treatment?
Residential care, also called inpatient addiction treatment, might be what you need if you:
- Currently use large amounts of a substance and need support to quit
- Don’t have access to a support system that would aid your recovery
- Have other medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, that require monitoring during treatment
- Haven’t been able to stop using substances on your own
- Need care for other mental health conditions, such as depression or bipolar disorder, along with treatment for substance use disorder
Our team conducts a thorough substance use assessment before you begin treatment. We use the results of this evaluation to recommend the level of care we believe will be most effective for you.
What to expect with residential substance use disorder treatment
When you arrive at one of our facilities, our admissions team completes your registration and answers your questions. Then a medical assistant takes your vital signs and checks your blood alcohol level. The presence of alcohol in your blood does not prevent you from entering treatment, though. We use these tests to assess your current health and determine if it’s safe for you to start treatment.
Your inpatient care may include:
- Detoxification: Detoxification, also known as detox or medically managed withdrawal, is a crucial part of substance use disorder treatment. During detox, we treat the physical and emotional symptoms that come with quitting substances, known as withdrawal. Our team has strong medical expertise in reducing your discomfort as much as possible during detox.
- Management of physical and mental health conditions: People with health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease or depression need extra monitoring and support. Our 24/7 staff work to ensure your safety and well-being throughout treatment.
- Medications: It’s common to experience intense cravings that make it difficult to stay sober. Medication for addiction treatment (MAT) uses FDA-approved medications to help manage cravings and prevent relapse. Many people with alcohol or opioid use disorders benefit from MAT.
- Therapy: We provide individual, family and group therapy. You receive multiple individual therapy sessions each week to ensure you receive the psychiatric support you need.
Your length of stay varies depending on your needs and treatment plan. On average, most patients stay in residential treatment for 14 to 28 days.
