Amyvid Brain PET Scan

Procedure

  • A nuclear medicine technologist will assist you with preparing for your exam
  • An intravenous (IV) tube will be placed into your arm or hand
  • A small amount of imaging tracer will be injected through the IV
  • You will feel nothing when the imaging tracer is injected
  • Following the injection, you will have roughly one hour to relax as the tracer flows through your body
  • Before imaging begins, you will be asked to remove all metal objects from around the head and face area (earrings, piercings, hair clips, etc.)
  • You will be taken into the imaging room for your PET scan
  • You will be asked to lay flat on your back and hold as still as possible for the duration of the exam (roughly 15 minutes)
  • During your exam your head and face will be in the machine at all times, if you have a fear of enclosed spaces or have difficulty laying flat due to pain or discomfort, please speak to your doctor about prescribing a proper medication prior to your appointment.
  • A safety strap is often used to help with patient comfort by holding the arms to the sides for the duration of the exam. If you feel this strap would make you uncomfortable, please speak to the imaging technologist about alternative methods to keep the arms and hands were they need to be for the exam
  • You must hold very still and breathe normally throughout the PET scan
  • Expect to be in the department for an hour and a half for the entirety of your PET scan appointment.

Preparation

  • It is best to be well hydrated for this exam, please drink water the day prior as well as the day of your exam.
  • Following the completion of your exam please continue to drink water and void frequently to minimize radiation exposure.
