Supplemental Oxygen - Advanced Devices and Management of the Mechanically Ventilated Patient

This course is designed for physical and occupational therapists and assistants. It provides an overview, and discusses the clinical benefits of heated high flow nasal cannulas, CPAP, BiPAP, and mechanical ventilation. It describes 3 modes and 5 settings of mechanical ventilation commonly seen in the intensive care unit, and discusses implications for therapy. The course also describes the differences between tracheal intubation and tracheostomy for ventilation. It lists specific clinical causes for impaired ventilation versus impaired respiration for consideration during therapeutic interventions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Describe flow in liters and FiO2 for each oxygen delivery mode
  2. Describe benefits of Heated High Flow Nasal Cannula, CPAP, and BiPAP
  3. Describe the differences between tracheal intubation and tracheostomy
  4. List 5 major ventilator settings
  5. Describe the 3 main ventilator modes and implications for therapy
  6. List causes of impaired ventilation vs. impaired respiration
  7. Discuss the titration of oxygen during therapy interventions for cardiovascular and pulmonary diagnoses commonly seen in the acute care setting

Audience: Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants

Credits: This course meets the criteria for 1.0 contact hours/CEUs, as approved by APTA Michigan, and qualifies for NBCOT PDUs.  Please check with your state licensing body to determine if course is eligible for CEUs in your state.
