Evidence-based Practice in Nursing

Evidence-based practice is the best that nursing can give to its patients and families, and to society at large. The search for such knowledge continues with nurses. As a staff RN, working around the clock and the calendar, there is no one in a better position to evaluate patient care and outcomes, and to ask the questions that need to be asked to improve patient care and outcomes.

Nursing Research Council

Henry Ford Jackson Hospital (HFJH) has a  Nursing Research Council to help nurses through the research process. The council helps identify other co-workers who have an interest in similar topics or issues.

By asking questions and seeking answers using the nursing research process, nursing can add to the body of scientific nursing knowledge and improve nursing practice and patient care.

Annual Research Symposiums

Each year, HFJH nurses prepare and deliver poster presentations containing original research, evidenced-based practice and quality improvement projects on a broad range of topics at the local and regional research symposiums. The clinical nurse members help present the nursing research projects to share the results with various internal and external attendees.

Clinical Nurse Specialist, Audrey Rutkowski, DNP, RN, presented a quality improvement project, “Improving Sleep Quality and Patient Satisfaction by Reducing Nighttime Disturbances in Hospitalized Patients” at the 2024 HFJH Research Symposium, and was awarded 1st place.

Clinical Nurse Specialists, Jessica Schmidt, MSN, RN, AGCNS-BC, PCCN, presented a quality improvement project, “Combating Workplace Violence: The Implementation of a Behavioral Emergency Response Team” at the 2024 HFJH Research Symposium, and was awarded 2nd place.

Nursing research, “Predictive Performance of the Hester Davis Scale for Fall Risk at Henry Ford Jackson Hospital” was presented at the 2024 HFJH Research Symposium by Kathleen Walsh, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and was awarded 3rd place.

Brook Blair, BSN, RN, CCRN, Clinical Educator, presented a poster on a quality improvement project, “ICU Made 4 U: Critical Care Education for Novice Nurses” at the 2024 HFJH Research Symposium, and was awarded 1st place. Taylor Soltis, BSN, RN, Clinical Educator, presented a poster on a quality improvement project, “Tele Turnaround: Improving Nursing Telemetry Assessment” at the 2024 HFJH Research Symposium, and was awarded 2nd place.
