Current responsibilities

Gwen Gnam, RN, MSN has been a practicing nurse for 38 years and is currently the Chief Nursing Officer / Vice-President of Patient Care Services at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI since July, 2011. Her clinical practice expertise is in surgery, ambulatory care, critical care and administration.

Gwen’s professional goal is to improve patient safety, customer satisfaction and employee engagement through standardization of work processes based on evidence based practices, continuous quality improvements in the hospital setting and creating a Culture of Caring. She was the lead Henry Ford Health System nurse on the Epic Inpatient Project and continues to lead the Nurse Advisory Council. Currently, Gwen and the Magnet Project Team are working with clinical nurses and nurse leaders on the Magnet journey.

Prior experience

Gwen has held several other key leadership positions in Nursing during her 27 years at Henry Ford Health System including Surgical Services Administrator, Administrator of Inpatient Nursing, Nursing Administrator of Surgical Inpatient Units, Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Administrator of the Canton Medical Center. She has actively supported and participated in key quality projects at Henry Ford including surgical safety checklists, mortality reduction, tight glycemic control, development and implementation of the rapid response team, No Harm campaign, implementation of an ICU electronic medical record, and surgical process improvements to increase safety in the perioperative setting.

Prior to locating to Detroit, MI, Gwen worked in both Memphis, Tennessee and Knoxville, Tennessee in both staff and leadership roles in Critical Care.

Education, awards and professional affiliations

Mrs. Gnam holds a Master’s degree of Science in Nursing and Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Tennessee Center for Health Care Science. Gwen graduated from Henry Ford Health System’s new Advanced Leadership Academy. She has presented training sessions at National Conferences including National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, American College of Surgeons, Catholic Healthcare, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Epic Nurse Advisory Council sessions and Epic User Group meeting.
