Aquatic Therapy (Pool Therapy)

Our aquatic therapy program focuses on exercises that might be too painful or difficult outside the water.

Aquatic therapy, also known as pool therapy, is a form of therapeutic exercise designed to restore or maintain function, improve mobility, reduce pain and increase strength. We offer this specialized care at our Henry Ford Medical Center – Chesterfield.

Daily Routine May Be the Source of Your Back Pain
Back pain can impact anyone, but some people are at a greater risk than others. Follow these tips to help avoid pain and injury.

How does aquatic therapy work?

Our program is led by specially trained physical therapists.

  • This type of therapy takes place in a swimming pool. It uses water and buoyancy to support the body, reduce joint stress, provide resistance and assist with movements.
  • It often speeds up or enhances healing by allowing you to perform exercises that might be too painful or difficult outside the water.

What conditions does it treat?

Pool therapy may be recommended after a surgery such as a knee or hip replacement. It may also be used to treat chronic or acute conditions, including:

What do I need to start pool therapy?

  • Get a referral: A referral for aquatic therapy that’s dated and has been signed by a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner within the last 90 days.
  • Make an appointment: With this referral, you can schedule an appointment by calling one of our locations, or through your Henry Ford MyChart account.
  • Provide your information: Either way, our team will gather information from you about your condition and referring provider, and will also verify your insurance coverage.
  • Start your aquatic therapy: Then you’ll be paired with the most appropriate therapist for your needs and start your pool therapy.

You should also plan to attend regularly scheduled rehabilitation appointments to ensure that you get the most out of treatment.

Sustain Your Mobility After Physical Therapy
