Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Scholarship for Underrepresented in Medicine Students

At Henry Ford Health, we are committed to fostering diversity within our department. We want to develop students to become future leaders in the field who will continue our mission of promoting equity, humanism, and social justice. We welcome everyone to join our orthopaedic surgery family, including those who are from backgrounds historically underrepresented in medicine and orthopaedics. We are proud to offer $1000 scholarships to help offset the costs of travel and housing associated with this rotation.

About our scholarship

The goal of this scholarship is to provide students with the opportunity to experience our orthopaedic surgery residency program as well as to live and work in the vibrant city of Detroit, one of the most diverse cities in the country. We aim to expose students to various opportunities within academic medicine and to provide mentorship and networking from both our residents and attendings. We hope to recruit applicants with interests, backgrounds, life experiences, and goals that will bring diverse perspectives to our department.

About our rotation

Students will complete a four week rotation within our department. This rotation typically consists of two weeks on the trauma or joints service and two weeks on another service, based on student preference. During the rotation, students are expected to participate in surgeries, clinic, didactics, and rounds. Students are also expected to take overnight call with the residents. The call responsibilities will be divided among all of the 4th year medical students rotating in the department.
