Goals and Objectives

Goals of the residency program

  1. To provide learning experiences based on measurable objectives for the education of residents during a five-year training program
  2. To promote a broad understanding of the role of general surgery as it relates to other medical disciplines
  3. To integrate the sciences applicable to general surgery with clinical experiences in a progressive manner
  4. To provide the general surgery resident with progressive responsibilities, commencing with patient care and progressing to complete patient management
  5. To develop the teaching skills of residents in general surgery
  6. To develop the skills necessary for surgical problem solving
  7. To develop professional leadership and management skills
  8. To foster lifelong learning in medical education
  9. To develop interest in and understanding of research in general surgery
  10. To prepare the resident to meet certification requirements of the AOA through the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and ABS American Board of Surgery

Objectives

  1. Manage surgical problems, based on the knowledge of basic and clinical studies
  2. Use critical thinking in making effective decisions for patient management
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in the psychomotor skills required of a competent general surgeon
  4. Teach basic surgical skills to medical students, interns, and other residents within the context of the residency program
  5. Collaborate effectively, and share knowledge with colleagues and allied health care professionals
  6. Make sound, ethical, and legal judgments in the practice of general surgery
  7. Provide cost-effective care to general surgical patients
  8. Educate patients and their families concerning health care needs
  9. Participate in opportunities for continuing education to promote personal and professional growth
  10. Read, interpret, and participate in clinical research, where appropriate
  11. Participate in community and professional organization
