Curriculum

Year One 

  • The entirety of the first year will be spent at Henry Ford Genesys rotating primarily on the GI service and performing procedures including colonoscopy, EGD, video capsule endoscopy, and paracentesis
  • Two week rotation on Parenteral/Enteral Nutrition Team
  • Development of academic and basic procedural skills
  • Involvement in consultative services and bedside management of all patients on the service
  • Review of pathology specimens with the Department of Pathology
  • Radiology review with the Department of Radiology
  • Outpatient experience with core faculty and dedicated HFGH downtown GI fellow clinic
  • Teaching/lecture responsibilities of the housestaff at HFGH
  • Development of case report and research topic

Year Two

  • Increased flexibility and exposure to consultative services and bedside teaching
  • Two to four week out rotation at Henry Ford main with advanced endoscopy procedures providing exposure to more invasive procedures including: ERCP,EUS, sphincterotomies and stent placements (2nd and/or 3rd year)
  • One month out rotation in hepatology/liver transplantation at Henry Ford Main
  • One month out rotation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (2nd and/or 3rd year) at Henry Ford Main
  • One month out rotation in GI Motility/Neurogastroenterology (2nd and/or 3rd year) at Henry Ford Main or American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) Rotation
  • Implementation of research project or fulfill case report track requirement
  • Further outpatient experience with Core Faculty and HFGH downtown GI fellow clinic

Year Three 

  • Advanced technical training, including advanced polypectomy, and EMR techniques
  • Completion of research, or case report track requirements including presentation at MSU Flint Research Forum as well as submission of research for publication at regional or national conference (ACG, AGA, ASGE)
  • One month out rotation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (2nd and/or 3rd year)
  • One month out rotation in hepatology / liver transplantation
  • One month out rotation in GI Motility/Neurogastroenterology (2nd and/or 3rd year)
  • Two week rotation on Parenteral/Enteral Nutrition Team
  • Increased outpatient responsibility at the HFGH downtown GI Fellow Clinic
  • Two to four week out rotation at Henry Ford Main with advanced endoscopy providing exposure to ERCP, EUS, sphincterotomy, stents, and state of art cutting edge advanced endoscopic procedures.

Upon completion of the program, the graduating fellow will have had broad exposure to the field of gastroenterology, academically, clinically, and procedurally. It is the goal of our fellowship program to produce outstanding, competent clinical physicians and life-long learners who maintain a passion for the field.
