What to Expect
In addition to the 13 core clinical block rotations (see curriculum), the fellowship has a strong and challenging didactic and coverage experience. Each week the fellows education will be enhanced by a variety of lectures, ultrasound didactics, journal clubs, and training room/sporting event coverage experiences.

University Training Room
Fellows will see athletes in their University Training room weekly at the University to which they are assigned

Sports Medicine Fellows Clinic:
This unique experience allows for the fellow to grow towards independent practice of sports medicine. Fellows are scheduled to see their own panel of patients in the Sports Medicine Clinic at the world Class Henry Ford/Detroit Pistons Performance center (link to DPPC). This clinic is typically precepted by the Program Director. These Clinics run August through June and are designed to give the fellow experience and comfort in autonomous practice.
Continuity experience in primary specialty area:
It is required that Sports Medicine Fellows spend at least a half-day each week maintaining their skills in their primary specialty. Family Medicine, Pediatric and Internal Medicine trained Fellows typically spend a half-day weekly in an outpatient primary care clinic. Emergency Medicine trained Fellows will work a day every 1-2 weeks in the Henry Ford Emergency Department. PM&R trained Fellows will spend a half-day weekly in non-operative Spine Clinic. These clinics run from August through June.

Each fellow will be assigned to cover a high school where they will cover football and other events as requested

Henry Ford is a regional leader in sports medicine which provides many unique coverage opportunities. Fellows are exposed to a wide variety of sporting coverage at all levels which can include the following:
*Professional: Detroit Pistons, Lions, Tigers, Red Wings
*MHSAA State Wrestling Finals
*Michigan Winter Special Olympics
*Rocket Classic
*Detroit Opera House
Additional Educational Activities:
Didactics: Fellows attend weekly lectures Tuesday Mornings given by SM Faculty members and other guest lectures- they are also expected to give 3-4 lectures/year.
SM Grand Rounds: Grand rounds take place monthly (~9/year). A variety of guest speakers and faculty members will provide lectures on various topics. Each fellow will provide a Grand Rounds lecture on a topic of their choosing
Ultrasound: From the first week of fellowship, fellows are exposed to MSK ultrasound with our “Ultrasound Bootcamp”. Ultrasound didactics occur on a bi-weekly basis and are led by SM faculty members in accordance with the AMSSM recommended curriculum. In addition to hands on workshops our fellows are exposed to a large volume of ultrasound-guided joint injections through fellowship.
