Introduction

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital is a 360-bed acute care facility nestled in southeast Michigan; only minutes from downtown Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Windsor, Ontario. We serve a population of 30,000 people. Our pharmacy department provides clinical support for general medical units, critical care and surgical services, oncology services, adult behavioral health, physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as labor and delivery. We additionally provide 24-hour emergency department pharmacist coverage. Our pharmacists regularly attend codes, engage in antimicrobial stewardship, and provide patient education to improve transitions of care.

ASHP’s PGY1 Program Purpose

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.

Residency Experience

Our PGY1 residency program offers broad experiences for residents including internal medicine, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, oncology, management, antimicrobial stewardship, drug information, and ambulatory care. Additionally, the program has built-in longitudinal opportunities focused on code blue and stroke coverage, patient education/transitions of care, medication safety, and policy/procedure development. Throughout the year, each resident will also present patient cases, lead journal clubs, develop a continuing education presentation, and prepare/conduct a research project. Residents are additionally able to enroll in a teaching certificate program educating pharmacy students through affiliations with Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.
