Program Tracks
Osteopathic Recognition Track
Henry Ford Health Providence Family Medicine Residency is ACGME accredited with an Osteopathic Recognition Track. Our program has been dedicated to Osteopathic Practices and Principles for many years.
All residents are welcome to be part of the Osteopathic Recognition Track. MD candidates will need to do additional work outside of residency to develop their Osteopathic skills including a hands-on Osteopathic Manipulation conference. Our Osteopathic Recognition Track residents are eligible for board certification by the American Board of Osteopathic Family Physicians and/or the American Board of Family Medicine. Our residents have maintained a 100% board pass rate for the AOBFP and/or the ABFM for more than 5 years.
The integration of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is encouraged and supported by all faculty. There are many opportunities to increase your Osteopathic Manipulation.
- Outpatient Osteopathic Manipulation Clinic: Both Family Medicine Centers have a dedicated OMT clinic every week. Osteopathic Recognition Tracks rotate through these clinics throughout their residency. They are staffed by our Osteopathic Faculty.
- Inpatient Osteopathic Manipulation: All residents are welcome to perform OMT on hospitalized patients. More than half of our faculty are DOs and can supervise treatment.
- Osteopathic Didactics: Osteopathic Recognition Track residents attend monthly didactics for additional practice. This is a 3-year curriculum which takes a different approach each year. Ex: Year 1: OMT by technique. Year 2: OMT by body region. Year 3: OMT by disease process.
- Osteopathic Rotation: All Osteopathic Recognition Track residents will have a month-long rotation in Osteopathy. This will include four ½ days of OMT clinics per week and inpatient OMT.
OB Track
Our program also offers an OB track for those with more interest in obstetrics care. OB track residents must log 80 deliveries, 10 of which may be c-sections. They will be responsible for following up to 10 continuity patients as the census allows. They will complete 4 months of rotations on labor and delivery, as well as an additional 2 weeks of Maternal Fetal Medicine.
Obesity Track
This track is for the resident who wants to gain proficiency in the care of patients with obesity and related disorders into their post-residency care of patients, and potentially become board certified in Obesity Medicine. Residents will gain multidisciplinary, multi-modality experience in the care of patients with obesity. An obesity medicine certified physician will mentor residents in this track, who at this time is Dr. Cheryl Smith.
MSK Track
Our program is in a privileged position to work with outstanding sports medicine physicians, while being affiliated with a sports medicine fellowship program. Through this connection, we are able to provide sideline coverage at a variety of sporting events at high school and collegiate levels. We also provide physical exam coverage for multiple local schools throughout the year.
The sports medicine/musculoskeletal track in the Henry Ford Providence Family Medicine Residency is built to provide the education to help explore and excel in a career in both Family Medicine as well as Sports Medicine. All while building the resume needed to take the next step into fellowship, should that be the career path that you are considering pursuing or desire a more robust educational experience in this area.
