Many adults experience back pain at some point in their lives. In fact, some estimates are that more than 80 percent of Americans report some form of back pain.

In this video, Ritu Zacharias, M.D., a spine and physical medicine specialist in the Department of Neurosurgery at Henry Ford Hospital, shares some of the hidden causes of back pain, including obesity, an injury or fracture, the curvature of your spine due to scoliosis or symptoms of arthritis.

She also offers recommendations for building up your core muscle groups through exercises like walking, running, biking and swimming. Yoga is also especially recommended to gain flexibility and stability. This can help reverse the domino effect of muscular issues that can be caused or complicated by underlying spine issues.

Get more tips for relieving low back pain, learn why good posture matters, and find exercises that can help you build up your core.
