PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership

The PGY1/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital provides an additional 12-month advanced training experience designed to develop pharmacy leaders who are prepared to navigate the complex and evolving health care environment.

The program builds upon the foundational skills developed during PGY1 training through progressive experiences in pharmacy operations, administration, leadership, medication-use systems, regulatory compliance, finance, and practice management. Residents engage in both focused and longitudinal learning experiences, allowing them to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to lead pharmacy services and drive meaningful improvements in patient care and health system operations.

Henry Ford Genesys Hospital established its 24-month PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL Residency Program in July 2023. The integrated program offers one PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL resident position per year and provides a seamless progression from foundational clinical practice to advanced pharmacy administration and leadership training.

HSPAL Purpose Statement

The PGY1/PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) Residency Program at Henry Ford Health Genesys Hospital is a comprehensive two-year training program designed to develop experienced, confident, and patient-focused pharmacy practitioners and leaders in the field of pharmacy practice. As members of the interdisciplinary health care team, our residents will be responsible for (1) ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based medication therapies and (2) achieving optimal patient outcomes related to these therapies. They will exhibit professional integrity by establishing and following a personal philosophy of practice, utilizing self-assessment skills to monitor their individual performance, exhibiting commitment to the development of profession, and demonstrating leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system and associated processes. Residents will gain extensive experience through a variety of rotations, projects, and leadership opportunities, under the mentorship of experienced pharmacy leaders and practitioners. Ultimately, graduates of the Henry Ford Health Genesys Hospital PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL residency program will become well-rounded pharmacy practitioners who will possess the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to drive the advancement of pharmacy practice within the inpatient setting.

HSPAL Intended Outcomes

The intended outcome of the PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL residency program is to develop a pharmacy practitioner who:

  • Develop leadership and management skills to effectively lead pharmacy operations, including personnel management, budgeting, and strategic planning.
  • Gain expertise in health system pharmacy practice with a focus on medication safety, formulary management, and regulatory compliance within a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Enhance clinical and operational decision-making by integrating evidence-based practices, pharmacy informatics, and technology to improve patient care and outcomes.
  • Foster collaboration and communication skills for working effectively with healthcare teams, executive leadership, and other stakeholders across the health system.
  • Prepare for board certification and future roles in pharmacy administration and leadership, equipping residents to advance into director or other high-level positions within health system pharmacies.

Accreditation Status

After completing the accreditation survey in November 2024 by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the PGY1/PGY2 HSPAL residency program at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital achieved full accreditation for 8 years.

Receiving 8 years accreditation is the longest a program can be accredited for after completion of a survey, and full accreditation demonstrates alignment of the program at Henry Ford Genesys Hospital with the residency accreditation standards set forth by ASHP.
