Orthopedic Surgery Residency
Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Henry Ford Providence Hospital. You have made a serious commitment by choosing Orthopedic Surgery as your lifelong career, one that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you more about our program.
Our mission is to provide a superior clinical education to residents in Orthopedic Surgery, and all functions of the Program are intended to support this mission in the context of providing high quality patient care. The program is designed to provide a broad foundation in all Orthopedic subspecialties, the core of which are found at Henry Ford-Providence Hospital and Henry Ford-St. John Hospital. During the five years of Residency, you will develop clinical and surgical skills by working closely with faculty members and will be given incremental responsibility for assessing musculoskeletal problems and developing appropriate plans of care. All clinical responsibilities will be performed under a faculty member’s supervision. Clinical practice will be supplemented with didactic meetings, clinical conferences, quality improvement meetings, and independent study. It is expected that all residents will participate in clinical and/or basic science research and bring at least one project to fruition. You will be given ample resources to accomplish this mission and rewarded with funding to present your works at regional or national meetings.
The program promotes the ethical standards and practice guidelines as set forth by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons (ABOS), and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). One major goal is to instill in the residents, by example and study, a personal code of ethics. The ethical standards and practice guidelines, as set forth by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, provide a foundation for residents to model during training and beyond.
At the conclusion of the residency training, graduates will be proficient in the fundamentals of Orthopedic Surgery and will be competent to practice Orthopedic Surgery in the community. Those graduates who wish to pursue an Orthopedic subspecialty will have a knowledge base and background that will allow them to successfully compete for a fellowship.
Thank you for your interest in our program and for making time during the busy recruitment season to visit with our residents, faculty, and staff.
