Health Psychology Practicum Training

The Section of Health Psychology at Henry Ford Health offers two clinical tracks designed to prepare graduate students for health psychology internship. The program's tracks provide the graduate student with a major area of study in health psychology and in-depth experiences in a specific area (transplant or bariatric).

The primary goal of the practicum training program is to prepare graduate students for advanced specialty training in health psychology. Our focus is to develop a clinician with strong diagnostic and conceptualization skills who, as the expert in psychology, interacts with patients and medical providers in supportive and culturally sensitive ways.

Prior to the start of practicum training, the graduate student participates in the hospital’s Epic orientation and training, as well as must complete a variety of Henry Ford University trainings.

Transplant Surgery: Average time commitment (16-20 hrs/week). This practicum occurs at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. This is a 1-year placement.

Bariatric Surgery: Average time commitment (16-20 hrs/week): 2 full days (typically 8am-4pm). This practicum occurs virtually. This is a 1-year placement.

Start date: June - September (to be negotiated with primary supervisor).

Practicum students are supervised individually by the licensed doctoral-level psychologist in the department they are working. There may also be some intermediate supervision by post-doctoral fellows, psychology interns, and other clinical staff. Telemedicine with remote supervision by licensed psychologist is likely for Bariatric Surgery track.

This series includes internal and external speakers whose presentations vary from year to year. Topics may include epidemiology of disorders or recent research in pathology, diagnosis, or treatment.
