Application Process

We appreciate your interest in Henry Ford St. John's Pediatric Residency Program.

The Pediatric Residency Program at Henry Ford St. John Children's Hospital participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) only. We offer nine categorical pediatric residency positions each year, all through the categorical pediatrics match, and proudly sponsor J-1 visas.

Each year, we receive nearly 1,400 applications from high-quality candidates and are able to extend interviews to approximately 10% of applicants. Residency program leadership conducts a holistic review of each candidate rather than relying on any single academic metric or characteristic to determine interview selection.

In reviewing applications, we consider a combination of factors, including:

• Academic performance and USMLE/COMLEX performance
• Medical school transcripts and training history
• Clinical experiences and preparation for residency
• Commitment to pediatrics and demonstrated interest in caring for children
• Letters of recommendation and assessments of clinical performance
• Personal statement and demonstrated communication skills
• Leadership, service, research, scholarship, and other meaningful accomplishments
• Longitudinal involvement in activities that demonstrate initiative, responsibility, teamwork, or commitment to a community
• Unique experiences, backgrounds, skills, or perspectives that applicants would bring to our residency community
• Evidence of professionalism, resilience, maturity, and the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, colleagues, and the healthcare team

We recognize that applicants come to residency training through many different paths. There is no single profile that defines a successful applicant to our program. We look at the application as a whole and seek residents who demonstrate the potential to grow into excellent pediatricians and who will contribute positively to our residency community.

Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted using the information provided through ERAS/Thalamus. Interview invitations are offered based on our interview schedule and available positions. Interviews for the upcoming recruitment season will be conducted virtually. Additional information regarding the interview format, schedule, and virtual meeting platform will be provided to invited applicants prior to their interview date.
