Pediatric Residency

The Henry Ford St. John Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Program offers comprehensive, hands-on training in a supportive, academically focused environment in the heart of Detroit. As an officially designated children’s hospital within Henry Ford St. John Hospital, we are proud to care for the children and families of the greater Detroit community while providing residents with broad exposure to both common and complex pediatric disease.

Our program accepts nine residents each year, creating a close-knit learning environment with meaningful faculty-resident relationships and progressive responsibility throughout training. Residents care for a diverse patient population across inpatient pediatrics, ambulatory pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, NICU, PICU, newborn medicine, and a wide range of pediatric subspecialties. This breadth of clinical experience provides residents with the opportunity to develop strong clinical judgment, procedural skills, communication skills, and confidence in caring for children with varying levels of complexity.

We place a strong emphasis on balance between clinical experience and rigorous didactic education. Protected educational time, daily teaching rounds, noon conference, case-based learning, journal clubs, clinical-pathologic conferences, simulation, and subspecialty teaching complement the hands-on clinical experience. Our curriculum is designed to build a strong foundation in general pediatrics while developing the knowledge and skills necessary for lifelong learning and continued growth.

Our goal is straightforward: to graduate confident, capable pediatricians who are prepared to serve their communities and well positioned to pursue fellowship training when desired. Graduates of our program have gone on to practice general pediatrics, pediatric hospital medicine, and pursue fellowships across a broad range of pediatric subspecialties.

We believe that excellent pediatricians are developed through strong clinical training, thoughtful teaching, progressive autonomy, and a culture in which residents are known, supported, and challenged to grow.
