In Michigan, the African-American community has cumulatively represented 14 percent of cases and 34 percent of deaths since COVID-19 infections began in March, while only making up 14 percent of the state’s population. Funding for this COVID-19 testing program is made possible by grants from the State of Michigan’s Racial Disparity Task Force and Johnson & Johnson’s Mobile Health Clinic Support Program.
This program expands the Henry Ford Health System Global Health Initiative’s (GHI) ongoing efforts to address the COVID-19 crisis using its Mobile Health Clinics. Since April, GHI has brought COVID-19 testing, education and outreach to thousands of Detroit residents through mobile units. It has delivered personal protective equipment (PPE) covering 26 nursing homes, 88 senior low-income apartment buildings, 10 schools, eight homeless shelters, one prison and 50 assisted living facilities.
