History of the Allergy and Immunology Division

In 1946 Joseph H. Shaffer, M.D., founded the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Henry Ford Hospital. The following year he created an allergy and immunology fellowship with a unique balance of clinical training and research. His work on bronchial asthma and insect allergy were published in JAMA in the 1960s.

Since the founding days our Division has focused on the triad of clinical care, research, and education. Over the years our faculty has conducted ongoing research with the benefit of longitudinal studies leading to increased understanding about the development and relationship of allergy, asthma, and immunology.

Several of our clinicians have served as leaders in local and national allergy societies, including our former Division Head John Anderson, M.D., who served as President of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) in 1990-1991.
