Lean- Where to Start?

Start with yourself and your vision of what could be. Start with culture and leadership, workforce education in Lean work fundamentals, rules and tools, and empowered workers with continuous incremental improvements derived from those workers. It is a major mistake to believe that one can buy technology and then have a truly Lean operation. Never automate poor process that no one is content with anyway and therefore unlikely to use. Lean is a leadership and management change of culture first and foremost. Lean need not cost anything but time, commitment and effort.

But that's the rub- As Thomas Edison said- "Opportunity is missed by most people because it comes dressed in overalls and looks like work." As leaders and managers you need to put your work in with your workers to reap the rewards of Lean. In a truly Lean operation that means harvesting the creativity and efforts of the entire workforce.
