Leading-edge training at one of America’s most respected transplant centers 

The Henry Ford Transplant Fellowship Program is built around a complete curriculum, preparing participants for practice with hands-on training and state-of-the-art technology mentored by some of the nation’s most respected physicians and surgeons. Fellowship training at Henry Ford includes:

• Robotic-Assisted Kidney Transplant
• Living Donor Liver Transplant
• Kidney Donation Surgery

The program is led by Marwan Abouljoud, M.D., past president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Dr. Abouljoud is an extensively published thought-leader and innovator in the discipline of transplant surgery. He performed the first split liver transplant in Michigan in 1996, and in 2000 developed the first adult-to-adult living donor liver transplant program in Michigan. In 2005, Abouljoud developed the first active laparoscopic liver surgery program, and in 2008 was the first in Michigan to perform a laparoscopic live liver donor procedure for transplantation.

Collaborating with Dr. Abouljoud in leading the department is Kimberly Brown, M.D., Associate Director of Henry Ford. Dr. Brown is a very active clinical investigator in viral hepatitis, advanced liver disease and post liver transplant management. She also serves as Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She is a member of the American Gastroenterology Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease (AASLD), the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society of Transplantation and was past co-chair of the Michigan Chapter of the American Liver Foundation. Currently, Dr. Brown is the Secretary for the AASLD and serves on multiple committees in that capacity.

The transplant fellowship program at Henry Ford Hospital is structured to comply with the educational guidelines and objectives of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. The focus will be to provide a solid clinical training in the areas of liver and kidney transplantation, multiorgan procurement, and clinical research opportunities. The transplant fellowship is two years in duration, and we graduate one fellow every year.

Transplant fellowship collaboration

Transplant surgery is a component of the multidisciplinary transplant programs offered at Henry Ford Hospital. There are distinct transplant nephrology and transplant hepatology programs with appropriate staffing. Collaboration is continuous with:

• Cardiology
• Chemical dependency
• General and interventional radiology
• Histocompatibility and immunology
• Nutritional support
• Pathology
• Pharmacotherapy
• Psychology
• Pulmonary medicine
• Transplant infectious disease

During your transplant fellowship you will have the opportunity to interact intimately with all these disciplines as you learn to manage patients before and after transplantation.
